Awesome exchange from the Lakersground.net forum:

(I suppose in this scenario that Melo and Dirk would agree to sign for $10 mil each.)

It's comical over there. Even with the Larry Coon article, they have no concept of how the salary cap works with having to pay for 1st round picks salary, salary slots mins and what a true max salary is. They think everyone will take a pay cut to be part of a has been team.

A couple of things I want to say....

First of all, how can you blame Kobe for taking the money offered to him? He has been on similar money for a long, long time and the team was able to build great teams around him then so why not take the offer and hope the team can do the same again.

Also, I think if a player has been with a club for a certain number of years, their salary should be heavily discounted against the salary cap.

Kobe Bryant should retire as an LA Laker. That is just the right thing for the game if you ask me. Yeah you can hate him and the Lakers, but who wants to see him have to move on like Olajuwon did? When a great player ends their career with another team its rotten.

The deciding factor on keeping a great player shouldnt be the salary cap. It should be how their salary effects the clubs cap. If the Lakers think Bryant is work $50 millions a season TO THEM, thats fine. However for the number of years he has played for that one club, his entire career, I think his cap figure should be discounted.

Where you make that kick in is up for argument. Maybe if youve played 10 seasons for the one club (That you also debuted with) only 75% of your salary counts on the cap with that figure going down every couple of years.

Thats my opinion anyway. I'm glad Kobe will retire a Laker but geez...thats a crazy contract they offered him.

I'm not blaming Kobe. Heck if I were him, and that was their OPENING offer, I'd hold out for 30 mil. Lakers are going to suck for the next three years though. So thanks Kobe.

That's nice you would. Maybe he shouldn't be so matter of fact about his thoughts on that but I would also bet my money that a team like the Charlotte Bobcats, owned by as astute an NBA owner and front office personality as Michael Jordan, seeking a star to bring fans out to watch the team WOULD offer and pay that amount to sign an aging Kobe Bryant.

Considering the discussion at hand then yes it was important for me to use the words in the way defined in the dictionary. Considering people in prior posts were stating in matter of fact fashion that it wasn't a pay cut then no **** I felt it necessary to point out that his prior contract was for a greater amount that the amount of his new contract. I'm pretty sure it was greater because Kobe took the contract offered to him w/o much of a negotiation according to him and his ppl and didn't test the FA waters. If he did then maybe we would know whether the **** or not he would have received 30mill from a team like the Bobcats or not. He didn't. Either way, he took a pay cut. Will it help his team or not, signs point to not by much. Whatever, he will be a Laker to end his career which will be good for the league and Laker fans and will also be great for Lakers opponents like the Rockets as the Rockets become prime legitimate championship contenders.
