Just proving your point on which team would pay him that much. And how do you know he's not worth the contract? For all we know he could come back and play at a high level. Played really well last year even when everyone said prior to the season he had nothing left in him.

Its true, nothing is certain in sports. But you do look at the odds in terms of likelihood.

And the likelihood is small that Kobe will be worth 24M/year over the next two. Could happen as you say, but the better run teams (not the Bobcats) would not take that gamble. It one thing to gamble on a guy whose contract is 4M/year. Its quite another at 24M/year.

Completely agree on what you're saying. People just need to let this whole contract this go and bring it up after the season when they can assess how he's performed.

Ok cool. We can definitely agree on this for the most part. Just wanted to make my point because I saw too many "not a paycut/less money" comments on here.

    All good.

Jim1961 already put forth the response to your first sentence.
Taking a "pay cut" implies more than just that one "could have gotten/received more".

    Scolandry answered the second sentence/question.

The thing is, Kobe's contract is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Lakers have been a well run and competitive franchise for a long while. The envy of most of the NBA.

Kobe has been a premier player, and the envy of most GM's in the NBA for a long time.

But now, both are faltering, and all the have not's are jumping on board. While Kobe's decline would happen with age eventually, it was accelerated by his injury. Dr. Buss passing away and giving the reigns to Jim Buss has the Lakers organization in murky waters and declining prematurely as well.

No, this will not stop anytime soon. Kobe and the Lakers organization has had the benefit of history as being high knights in their shining armor. Untarnished and standing tall.

But some have noticed that their armor doesn't shine anymore. In fact, rust flakes from its edges. Whats more, Camelot has been pillaged and replaced by doppelgangers.

Sadly, while the rest of the countryside has noticed these changes, the people of Camelot (LA) haven't.

So the storytelling (blog wars) will continue until the spell is broken and the citizens of LA are put in their place.

Haha great storytelling but I feel like Dr. Buss would've shown the same loyalty to Kobe as his son has. But the Lakers management will be evaluated with what they do this offseason and the next offseason coming up.

Both the players and the owners should be ashamed of their greed at the expense of us fans.

LOL at the people still defending the "pay cut" line.

I love that you're so matter of fact about something you have no idea about. Maybe they would. I would bet my money that they wouldn't pay even 2/3 of that. Nor would anyone else in the league.

Unless it's extremely important to you to use the words "pay cut" in the way they're defined in the dictionary, it adds nothing to point out that his previous contract was bigger over and over again. No ****. Now, was it bigger because Kobe willingly took less this time or because no one was willing to pay more?

It was a baseless claim made more authoritative (I guess) by stating that anyone who disagrees with it is an idiot.

Indeed. But don't get me wrong, I LOVE this deal!

eMat, it's pointless; these guys are completely clueless when it comes to NBA salaries. The idea that any team would pay Kobe $30M/year at this point is so ridiculous it's hard to believe we aren't being trolled. Even Kobe Nation is largely appalled that he received less than that.

The Lakers don't need Kobe to sell tickets. Kobe should have been amnestied but instead they've given him two more years to be a 7th/8th seed team.

Well there is 2 more years of the Lakers being a media pretender but not a contender.

Even if Kobe comes back and exceeds expectations, he will still be the highest paid player in the league for the next two years. What level does he have to play at to warrant that?
