I don't "love" Williams. But I do think he is going to be a better player than either of DMo/TJones. My proposed trade for Williams had DMO/TJones/Smith going out different places for a pick and a small forward to send to Minny for him. I was not interested in dealing Asik for him. Look at my signature for the type of trades I want for Asik. Asik is more valuable than any of those guys individually and that includes Derrick Williams of course.

Williams had his moments last season where he showed what he was capable of. The fact of the matter up there is he never gelled with Adelman BECAUSE Adelman was against drafting him in the first place when Kahn was there. Adelman played a huge game of cutthroat with Kahn over Derrick Williams.

I remain very confident that once Williams finds the right fit of a team, that being a team with a good defensively dominant center that has some sort of post game that allows Derrick to spot up on the perimeter and either catch and shoot or drive and finish, he will thrive. He knows how to play basketball and he has a high skill level. Almost every NBA person will tell you that and almost every single NBA person will tell you that Williams was drafted onto the wrong team in the wrong situation.

If Williams had been traded here and plugged into our starting lineup he would have looked very good and thus his contract situation would have not been an albatross on our cap. Playing in our system would have flipped Derrick Williams (as it does many players) into a tradable asset.

I'm surprised that is all Minnesota could get for him. Would have expected that for a 3rd year player with still-high theoretical potential, he would net a future asset of some kind, even if it's as little as salary filler + second rounder platter.

Perhaps their not doing so is a nod to the fact that the Wolves are all in to make a deep playoff run in the next 2 years.

It's never a good idea to depend on a non-shooting perimeter player when you have a penetrate-and-kick PG. It also gives opposing teams the ability to swap forward spots and have the SF chase Love any time he moves outside. I'm not sure the Mbah a Moute fit makes sense.

so this isn't just a salary dump for the pups? saves them a pro-rated $700K this year and another $1.3MM next year.

A change of scenery is what Williams needed. The guy is only 22 and hardly played in minny. 2 second round picks for a former #2! Sac is going to be very happy.

I wouldn't call MAM underrated. He got overpaid because of his defense but he's even less of a factor on offense than Chuck Hayes.

First game for new team. Logged season high minutes on SF position if I'm reading the stats correctly (Jason Thompson if a PF, right?). Didn't watch the game, but 12 points on 6-13 shooting to go along with 6 RB, 4 AST and only 1 TO is a nice start.

Maybe, but D-Will was getting no playing time and Mbah a Moute is Love's buddy. So it's not purely a salary dump.

I watched the game and CP3 was out + Redick was limited to 17 min, so the clips couldn't play their typical game. Nevertheless, Derick Williams was very impressive for his first game with a brand new team playing SF next to two true bigs.

Active hands on the defensive end, playing within the offense, successfully leading the fast break (!), meshing early with Vasquez for easy hoops after cutting well to the basket, etc.

Seems like a change of scenery finally got that monkey off his back. Kid is talented and Sactown made a good trade.

You base that the monkey is off his back on the showing of one relatively decent game? In his very first game with the Wolves, he shot 6-14 and had 6 rebounds in 24 minutes.

I'm sorry if I implied that he is now all of a sudden living up to his draft position; not my intent at all.

What I mean to say is that, judging from the plays he made, he fits in better with the Kings than he did with Minnesota.

Wait till the full highlights come out, there was a beautiful feed from Williams to McLemore for an alleyoop dunk and a number of other connections.
He played with energy and demonstrated confidence by contributing on the offensive end without getting in the way of Cousins or anyone else. I don't know the details of why he was relegated to the bench in Minny, but he fit in very nicely at the 3 next to a Thompson/Patterson and Cousins.

As an aside, it is interesting how much trust the team placed on him from the get go: Personal meeting owner. Players allowing him to dictate the offense when he felt like he had an advantage. Starting AND finishing his first game.

I'd say the monkey is off his back.

Always liked D-Will. But I love Vasquez even more, he is a very good and underrated PG.

If all it took were 2nd rounders I definitely would have wanted to take a crack at him, but I don't think D-Will is gonna be better than Tjones. He might end up being a better offensive player, but TJones is and will always be the better defender because D-Will is undersized at the 4 spot.
