Rumor is that the guy who advised the Bulls to extend Rose's contract also advised the Lakers in this deal.

What? There's a certain age where people cannot where hats anymore..?

Ugh. I really don't want Kobe to be the all-time scoring leader. All the idiot fans "he's the best scorer ever! He's better than Michael Jordan now!!" ignoring the fact he only has 2 scoring titles (or is it 1?) and MJ had higher scoring averages with better shooting % and the most scoring titles ever.

    Sad but true. :p

Why exactly wouldn't he be able too? Its not like he was averaging 15ppg before he went down. His assists numbers were up, he was still top 10 in scoring, so why couldnt he?

Just like we forgave dwight for.having.one bad year and.not.gelling with a player why cant we do.the sam for kobe. Maybe they were just a bad match. I.mean the guy has 5 rings.

    Yes and no.

I agree that the franchise should honor the star for what they have done. But it's on the fading star who demands something that's unreasonable, mostly because of pride.

It's not about money. It's about hamstringing the team from being able to compete. If it's money, the team could pay the guy in other ways after he retires.

Also, Manning's case is very different. It's not about age but about the injury. Most people believed that he would not be able to return full strength from the injury. I think the team made a reasonable calculation to let him go.

A lot of people said that the Blazers held on to Oden, and later Roy, too long that set the team back for several years. Same with Orlando's dealing with Grant Hill's injuries. And we Rockets fans should look no further than the Yao Ming dilemma.

yep, I wanted to take off manning's pic after I posted it but wanted to see poster opinions. Those other players you mentioned aren't good comparisons because never accomplished anything for their respective franchises. With Kobe, he's a guy who has played there entire career and won multiple championships, and been the face of the franchise. You give him money he wants to show you're honoring him for what he's done, even if the team can't compete for a few years. Eventually the fan base will turn on him if he's playing not up to his contract. Hakeem is a much better comparison. Duncan would be another candidate in San Antonio.

Why wouldn't they at least wait until he is playing again? See what he can still do or not do? What is the hurry? Are they so dire for some sort of instant gratification that they would mortgage the next two years on a whim? A guess? A hope that he can be 90% of the previous Kobe?

The timing of this just makes absolutely no sense.

Another view, they know they aren't getting LeBron, and Kobe's extension expires the same year that Durant's contract ends. That gives Mr Colorado almost three seasons to become all time scorer. After that, Kobe can hit the road while they chase KD.

This is a great day for the other 14 teams in the West. The Lakers won't win a championship anytime soon with Kobe on the books for that much.

Larry Coon's quick take on the Kobe signing.

    http://cbafaq.com/blog/?p=286

Interesting point. The absolute max salary cap room (assuming a cap of 62.9m next summer) the Lakers can muster is about 28 million. Assuming they sign someone like Carmelo this offseason (or any other max contract type of player) means they are out of the running for Kevin Love in the summer of 2015.

OMG this is hilarious. I knew Kobe was an egomaniac but even this is too much. The funniest thing is now he's clearly just gunning for the scoring title (which ain't gonna happen unless he plays at least 5 more years), so be prepared for a lot of sad faces on the team as he chuck chuck chucks his way to individual glory!
