    Ron Artest
    Pau Gasol
    Dwight Howard

This is crazy - why would they offer so much and why would he accept? Does he want to finish his career limping into the playoffs or not making it at all... you can't build around that salary.

But he did take a paycut! His contract before was just so bad that he is still the most expensive player

This tells you that "Kobe just wants to win" is one of the biggest myths in NBA history.

You guys are forgetting something. LA is a big market and the name Kobe alone with generate enough cash flow to make up for the money paid to kobe. These people are no dummy. Kobe is a money maker for them. This isn't sports this is business.

I respect the franchise owner for this decision. Signing Kobe for so much might leave your team noncompetitive for the duration of his contract but he's the face of your franchise and has contributed so much to it over the entire length of his NBA career. You tell him how it is, that it's a lot and will make it more difficult to be competitive, but you sign for whatever he wants because he gave your franchise multiple championships and one of the best dynasties ever in the NBA. Two years pales in comparison.

    Signed,

    painful.... I know.

(I am not a Kobe/Lakers fan but this kind of gratitude is really the right thing)

He's given up chasing rings. It's all about getting the scoring record, and Lakers' fans get to watch him chase it for the next three years. They won't win a championship or make deep playoffs runs, but they can watch Kobe battlefight his way to Kareem's record.

a question about hakeem. Why did he come off the rockets bench for 25 games or so his last 2 years here and finally who started over him in toronto that he came off the bench for 20 some odd games.

Can't imagine kobe or MJ ever coming off the bench

everybody wins in the long run.

kobe/laker fans get to watch kobe retire a laker and become the all-time leading scorer.

the lakers organization still gets a ton of money.

everybody else gets to laugh knowing kobe will never get his 6th.

everything you said is true. however, i think the point people are making is not if the organization can financially afford his contract, but how this effects their salary cap and ability to WIN. the cash flow of the organization is not really being questioned here

You should learn how the NBA operates. This is also $96 million in luxury tax the lakers will be paying the league to split amongst other non luxury paying teams

Lakers holding onto the past, rather than building for the future.

Is there a reason why this deal was done now instead of after the trading deadline? I assume Kobe's agent pressured the Lakers into making the deal now.

In addition to what scolalist and ln3012 (do your friends call you "8"?) posted, there is also the nature of LA fans to consider.

They love him right now, but will they love him and show up to watch a shadow of his former self score 16 points on 19 shots while getting torched by some young gun on the other team? From what I know of LA, the answer is no.

Maybe the whole loyalty thing score them points in the eyes of other star players though. They didn't exactly have that kind of feeling for Shaq, but then, they didn't bring him in as a rookie either.
