For once, an admittedly COF thread: Another look at Casspi's D. Can you explain the following?

Dont be silly. Parsons will not lose his starting spot no matter how bad he shoots from 3. He is one of McHale's pets.

Ain't no way. I cringe every time Casspi dribbles unless it's a clear lane to the basket. By the end of the season, Casspi won't even have a spot in the rotation if the Rockets solve their PF problem. He'll be 3rd-string SF behind Cisco.

Fair enough - too small a sample size, I agree.

So how about checking the Defensive Rating across all of our lineups in all 14 games this season?

    See here:
    http://stats.nba.com/leagueLineups....e=Advanced&sortField=DEF_RATING&sortOrder=ASC

Omri Casspi features in both of our best ranking defensive lineups:
    1. Casspi-Harden-Howard-Lin-Parsons: ...... 85.5 DefRtg (points allowed per 100 possessions)
    2. Asik-Beverley-Casspi-Garcia-Lin: ........... 89.6 points allowed

He is also missing from the least successfull defensive lineups on that stat source (all 8 other lineups on that 250 lineups' list), like:
    10. Beverley-Harden-Howard-Lin-Parsons: .. 120.7 points allowed
    9. Harden-Howard-Jones-Lin-Parsons: ....... 113.2 points allowed
    8. Beverley-Howard-Jones-Lin-Parsons: ..... 110.6 points allowed
    7. Asik-Beverley-Harden-Howard-Parsons: .. 109.0 points allowed (Twin Towers! Low D??!)
    ...
(BTW, Lin is also featured on both best D lineups, but he's also in the worst ones)

    To be fair:
This doesn't mean Omri is responsible for the good D,
but it DOES suggest, based on the largest sample size available,
that his defensive influence is by no means negative.

No defensive liability there... Can we agree on that?

Parsons is gone if he cannot raise he 3P% back above league average. 30.9% is abysmal. Morey is not going to overpay a swingman who can't shoot 3's.

I would not make too much based on one game, but last time I looked at Casspi's +/- record, it was excellent. Because he is such an effort player, he has a good effect on the team. I don't agree with the selfish player tag either. He does not take more shots than anybody else and when he is on the floor, ball movement is generally much better.

This is very interesting data. What about the best offensive line ups?

This was the knock on him in Sacramento, not necessarily that he is selfish but that he tries to do to much, he thinks he is Lebron or something lol

Omri is gonna lose us some games at some point this season.

Ive been pissed at his selfishness on offense. Dude refuses to make the extra pass, then he'll brick up his 3 point chest, push shot. Lots of random shots early in the shot clock. Omri, we get it youre a solid 3 point shooter, but that's it. move the damn ball!

Weird that a thread that was trying to say Casspi is not that bad defensively suddenly goes into how selfish his offense is......

I am Casspi fan but the truth must be heard-
Casspi doesn't play with the first team but the second.
As a result he plays against the other team's 2nd lineup and can have a better stats.

To measure Casspi he must play against the 'big' guys and play lots of minutes.
Until this happen, for me, Casspi is a good player for the 2nd lineup and that is the way we should treat him.

Casspi offense has saved the rockets a few times early on in the season.. that runner he has going is been pretty lethal. Now when Garcia dribbles im like NOO.

Oh sure Ben, by all means - That's my point exactly. :)

Omri IS a good 2nd unit rotation player, in a contender team (I believe), which is s great thing to be, IMHO!

He is a 2nd unit guy that contributes well on both sides of the court, especially when the team is rolling and running smoothly.

The thing is - since he's an all-in, full-effort, storm-the-court kind of player - he'll be as good as the team will be. He will never set the tone, but he may darn right amplify the volume sky-high when the beat is on.
(That's why, when the team gets sticky in ISO and all, you'd feel as if he's sticky and selfish as well)

One more thing: I've been following Casspi since before the NBA, and I was surprised to see a new aspect of his game for the first time this year - He has turned into more of "a responsible adult": He usually makes good calls now (tonight wasn't the best example for that...), has very few TOs, passes surprisingly well (better than in previous years, at least) and has good court vision.

He's a better team player with the Rockets (so far) than he was in any of his previous seasons.

    Casspi is ****.

Honestly, he can hit the 3 pretty well. But between his belief of being a point-forward and his invisible defense we cannot afford this useless player any longer.

I'd like to stick him on the 3rd strong. For now, let D-Mo get his minutes. Once the Asik situation is resolved, he can continue to be a 3rd stringer and hopefully we'll have an even stronger bench.

I remember Morey saying even 31% or better is fine. this was a few years back when Lowry couldn't shoot and we were trying to get him more aggressive with it.

He said this on a 610 Sports Radio interview.

Actually Casspi is doing reasonably well for a role player. He is shooting 36.6% from three point range. And here are his defensive stats, which rank him about 60th in the league in opponents PPP.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same player, Draft Boy...
Actually, no one on the Rockets' roster fits the description you assembled here.
Anyway - it's always nice to read a well backed-up and data-anchored post like yours.

Some more stats, that may attest to player's effort...

Average speed leaders (based on the new Player Tracking by SportVu):
    1. Beverly - 4.6 MPH
    2. Casspi - 4.5 MPH (67th in league)

Distance traveled per 48 minutes (based on the same):
    1. Beverly - 3.6 miles
    2. Casspi - 3.6 miles (45th in league)
