Well, since it is one of the deepest QB classes, doesnt that make sense to wait until the 2nd round to draft a QB? I mean, if there are 8 really good prospects, why not wait?
Who is doing the picking? Who is this team getting to "teach" that guy on how to become a Pro-Bowl type player in this league? Even guys like Luck rely on a coaching system/pedigree system to develop/succeed... and a host of QB's who seemed "talented" failed in part due to their team not being able to groom them appropriately. Its a damn important position... but one that teams routinely fail to improve, despite wasting high draft picks on them, every single year.
If only 1 or 2 will end up as Pro-bowlers, then it's not a deep draft. You have a unique opportunity to draft a pro-bowl QB - why wouldn't you take it? When will that opportunity arrive again? Better to spend your early #1 on a potential pro-bowl QB than an early #2 on an average starting QB. And why is taking a potential pro-bowl QB a "waste" of an early pick?
That's true of all positions. There are O-Line busts, WR busts, defensive busts, etc. Not picking an important piece because of a fear of picking a bust is a terrible way to run a franchise.
Unless Schaub is injured there's no need for us to ever see Schaub in a Texans uniform again, he is a dead end. The rest of this year is seeing what you have in Keenum and going from there. And I hope the shoring up for this team will come from another regime because I don't trust the current regime to do anything.
I don't know what your angle is... We have a defensive cornerstone in Watt, we can build around him with picks in the later rounds. But the chances of us getting a franchise QB in the 2nd or 3rd are minuscule compared to the chances of us getting one with the 1st or 2nd overall pick.
If Keenum plays badly for both halves, then yes, we might need to find an answer for that position in the draft. But Keenum IS still learning on the fly. We're going to get growing pains with any QB, imp.
