I don't recall anybody hailing Beverley as an elite perimeter defender. General on-ball defense, yes -- perimeter defense, no. I know I keep repeating this, but it was always suggested that perimeter defense was the whole reason we kept Brewer over Reggie Williams. Unclear why his ass is glued to the bench, if that's the case.
I'm with you klutchQT, his on ball pressure is great but the hype was real around here this summer, after the pelicans preseason game, & when he got the start over Lin.Many posters & (MEDIA) were under the assumption that having bev start with Howard this defense was going to be on lockdown, like we had a young artest out there or something.
I just don't recall anybody hyping him as a great perimeter defender. The only person I've heard hyped relative to perimeter defense is Brewer, who gets 0 minutes.
I think a big problem is we put too much effort on offense and push too much. It's really hard to go hard on both ends when you're too exhausted to put in the effort on defense
People who know basketball know that at his height he can defend the 1-3, he's great at on ball pressure, but there were plenty of people like bev will hold us down with playing next to harden. A perimeter defender is someone who you can put to stop someone around the three point line when needed & bev was that guy this summer and people said he stopped Westbrook in the playoffs
Brewer sure was good at it in Utah and Chicago. Garcia and Bev play inspired at times but, dont play defense consistently well over an entire season.
Yeah if my statement didn't have anything to do with u claiming bev was the answer at perimeter defender not sure why you entertained my question. I didn't say it was everybody of course it wasn't everybody.
James Harden. I'm completely serious. When he puts his mind into playing defense he can stop most guards in the league. The keyword here is "when", which doesn't happen too often.
Beverley's defense has been exposed so far as a starter. He has yet to show that he can be a good stopper. The problem isnt getting individually good defenders, its about improving TEAM DEFENSE. If you can get everyone buying in and playing TEAM DEFENSE, it doesnt matter so much as to whether you stick Beverley or Brewer in there, the defense in general will be much better.
His on the ball pressure is great, his intensity is excellent for CERTAIN matchups. Players like Westbrook, Parker, Paul, Deron, Rose, Wall, Holiday, Irving, Curry are the matchups where Bev should get his full 25mpg on them(10 or so less than the other team's PG will play). His intensity changes the game. He can't bring that intensity as a regular 30mpg starter that sets the pace. He CHANGES the game, he needs to not be counted on for much offensively and strictly be a spot-up shooter. Defensively, he coming in and tiring out the other team's aggressive PG is where he's suited best. Calderon, Rubio, etc. are PGs he's useless against. They are usually far more conservative PGs.
Been thinking about him, he has the length and athletic skills & can knock down the 3, defense is about effort and just staying in front of your man on the perimeter, the younger players are usually the hungrier ones when it comes to this, hopefully he will get a try later in the year
