Lol if you think that are the reasons to take a bike you have never been in the netherlands.

Good to see the netherlands make the list. There are enough people here that complain, but good to see many People understand that it is great to live in the netherlands.

There is heavy industry in those countries. I think half of Norwegians are roughnecks working in the North Sea. Ikea and Volvo are large industrial companies in Sweden, though I imagine manufacturing is off-shored to Turkey. And Switzerland has heavy industrial companies headquartered within its borders such as Weatherford and Transocean.

So because they are white, that is the reason why they can afford this? There are a lot of small homogenous countries that are unable do this. Why don't we look at what they are doing and compare them to other countries who rank low on the list instead of making simplistic conclusions?

Nolen's post earlier discussed how the Danes, among others, possess a large sense of collective responsibility, and how importance said sense matters to these sorts of happiness rankings. This is a LOT easier when your country is highly racially homogeneous, though the downside is that said countries are much more likely to be filled with racist idiots ( and as much as liberals and others want to pretend to the contrary, Europe is way behind the United States when it comes to race relations). In addition, being located in a highly stable region and being able to exploit the capitalist system on the backs of the lesser countries are reasons why Denmark and those small European countries can do stuff like this.

To me, these are all talking points. I am willing to accept this if somebody can point me to a study that concludes the above. You referenced Nolen's post and did he not point out that Canada, a country who came in 6th, not homogenous, not in that part of the world?

It feel that it is easy to backup of your claim. Define what you mean by homogeneous, look at the list of countries on the report, see if you can find a pattern. Let me know if it is due to geography, size of the country, homogenous or HEALTH CARE SYSTEM?

You're missing my point. I'm not talking about happiness. I'm talking about a collective responsibility ethic, which is needed for a really extensive social welfare system of the sorts you believe is necessary to establish "happiness" - such systems have difficulty surviving when everyone is attempting to game it. And establishing such an ethic becomes far easier in a homogenous society, but the downside of such a society is that its inhabitants have a much easier time discriminating against "outsiders" - I mentioned the small European countries, but there is Japan, a country legendary both for its collective mindset and for its ridiculous racism. And no doubt you just know the stories of small remote villages which are suspicious of outsiders.

If you want an example, take a look at the graph which shows the happiness rankings in the actual report, and then look at what actually is the biggest difference between Denmark and the United States. It's not the "social support" category. It's the "perception of corruption" category. Danes don't think their government is corrupt. Americans do. That does NOT mean that the American government actually IS corrupt ( otherwise that would mean Hong Kong, Qatar, and Oman are less corrupt than the United States, to which my response is bahahahahahaha), but thanks to the endless media and America's destructive political culture, the perception exists. The Danes don't have that perception due to their ethic.

Thanks for the clarification. I can see your point but I feel that the question we should ask with that is .. is their Ethical behavior a byproduct of government policies or a particular culture needs to be ethical to begin with?

Case in point... just a few decades ago, Singapore was ranked the most corrupt country in the world, economy was bad, health care system was the worst, etc. They implemented strict corruption laws and a universal health care system. Now, they rank very high in the least most corrupt country in both factual and perception. They have a growing economy and very healthy people. They are not a homogeneous as they are composed of so many different cultures and geographically located where there is always some tension. So they seem to have broken all the rules that you mentioned in your statement.

In America too, the perception on DUI and smoking has taken a 180 degree turn compared to how we viewed it just a few decades ago. This was all due to government policies and media.

These are just some examples that shows that government policies has and can modify behavior whether it be ethical or not.

Didn't you know that all white people are hardworking? Only blacks and mexicans are lazy.

Nonsense. We don't live in the 10th century. We know too much about genetics now to think the Danes are so stupid as to only feel responsible to each other because they are more homogeneous. They simply know that, the way their system is structured, there is more to gain by being responsible to each other than there would be if they were living in another system. They planned it this way, and they have achieved something which they can be proud of.

When you are put in a situation whereby it's either you or your neighbor who can succeed, you are not going to feel responsible to each other, even if you are identical twins.

    Nope.

It's easier to share when you know the people benefiting are being as responsible as you are.

This is also nonsense. They know full well that not everyone is being equally responsible. They know that there are some immigrants who are leaching on their resources for some time now, but that hasn't made them feel less responsible towards each other.

The moment immigrants in Denmark are treated differently than everyone else, as they would be in many other countries, that's when the sense of responsibility to each other diminishes. People in Denmark have no innate reason to be more responsible with benefits than people anywhere else.

I don't think you fully grasp what a homogeneous society means. The populace still mostly conform into a norm. It's not like in the US where there's such an income, ideological, moral etc. disparity between big chunks of racial groups.

Because the situation is not as drastic yet. Their system can still far take it.

They are responsible to other Danes. They should be selective that immigrants are up to the same standard of people as they are.

The happiest country is the one where men can get laid rather easily, and they don't have to worry about so many criminals w/ guns.

But seriously, Denmark and it's neighboring European countries have a more even distribution of wealth among the population. The average worker can live comfortably on their income combined with government benefits.

In America, the top 1% own more than 70% of the wealth. The cost of living is terribly skewed towards the upper class.

When I think of a person being bored, I kind of feel like he's happy, or at least content. If you're bored, then you're fine with your situation. Otherwise, you'd be stressed.

Denmark may not be the happiest country in the world, but if it's the most boring, then the people there are likely not unhappy.

Which they currently do. Just like Canada and the UK, they have a points based system that they use to determine if you have enough skill sets to be a productive member of society before they grant you any kind of residency permit. Compare that to the US where all that is needed is a US citizen to petition you.

It is much easier governmentally to provide for the needs of the people when the population is small and homogeneous. That's the point.

How do you define small as that can be subjective?
