I met up with an influential person in Houston planning yesterday, and had a good conversation. He told me that parking requirements have actually increased, because now all apartments are required to build so many guest spaces, adding to the minimum requirements. Also, Centerpoint has a contract with the City of Houston for utility lines, but it violates the American with Disabilities Act in many instances, as is seen many times with poles in the middle of sidewalks all around the city, however the City doesn't have the will to sue Centerpoint though. Also, in the City of Houston property owners are required to build and maintain sidewalks and curbs. So if something happens to your curb or sidewalk, don't bother calling the city, it's your responsibility.

Basically he is saying if a guy takes a dump on your curb or sidewalk, you have to clean it up and not the city.

Parking requirements in this city are really absurd. Everyone feels entitled to have a spot to park their car, and the city codes enable that entitlement by hamstringing developers with ridiculous mandates for an abundance of parking spots on whatever land they build on.

Is this your day job? If so, I have some ideas about fixing traffic. I'd love to get in touch with somebody influential who could give me lots of money to fix it. ;)

Does the sidewalk thing apply to business owners too? I know someone who had their curb damaged by an 18 wheeler, but was told they couldn't do anything because it's the city's property, so it's up to the city to couldn't ask for compensation because it's the city's property.

    Sidewalks: police your own.

On a serious note, why would you post this as if anyone was dying to know about their sidewalk?

Yep, because the entire libertarian philosophy is based on maintaining your own sidewalks!

Not sure. I do know that developers and such are responsible for making their own sidewalks. Which is why you see a lot of inconsistencies walking on sidewalks. Sometimes they get wider, narrower, etc. Sometimes they disappear entirely.

I live in Rice Military and the f'n city in its infinite wisdom banned parking pretty much on all streets. I live in a townhouse with no driveway and am screwed. Have a ditch/open sewer in front of the townhouse that is fugly and fills up every time it pours. The new houses get to build a driveway on those, but apparently we can't even do that.

I need to go to their office on Washington and scream at someone!
