That's why newspapers all over the country are writing about this? USA Today, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, etc etc etc.
The most common thing I hear from non-Houstonians when the Astrodome is mentioned is "why is that still standing?" or "that thing is still around?".
Even if it was legal, you wouldn't be able to put a casino on the same grounds where NFL games are played.
Die a painful death? Really? Internet battles to the death break out in the most random of threads. LOL... EDIT: And they're gone.
This thread has brought out the worst in some people. I'm gonna miss the dome, but the way it looks now is pitiful. Wish we could find an economic way to renovate it and turn it into a year round mini theme park, but it is what it is. So many young people in Houston never got to experience AstroWorld/WaterWorld.
It's destruction is news worthy, but that doesn't mean anyone nationally cared enough to actually come visit the Dome as a tourist attraction or would have even if it were fully renovated. When's the last time any one who lives in Houston drove over there specifically just to see the Dome? I imagine the list of people who have done that is pretty close to zero. Sure when you drive by it, or go to a Texans game now you might get nostalgic, but on a day in and day out basis the average person won't even know it's gone. They could still make a small museum inside Reliant with a miniature replica of the Dome, pictures, info, and memorabilia to preserve the history without preserving the Dome itself.
Alas you are right...... Yes it brought out the worst in me, I should have just walked away... sorry.
Call it bang city! Each level of the dome could represent a different level of debauchery. Or make it the world's largest swing club. Grooooooooooooooss!
That would actually be pretty sweet. Can you imagine Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture playing and, instead of cannons, it would be the dome BLOWING UP. Like the final scene in Caddyshack.
^^^^^ I heard they can't do it that way because it's too close to Reliant and might damage the structure.
