Like he groomed Schaub into the qb who would go into the fetal position at the sight of a defensive player within 5 feet of him? No thanks.
I ran a Texan web site back in those halcyon days, and my first inkling of “uh oh…” was when Capers came out said Peppers wasn’t a fit for his system. I wrote an article about him needing to reevaluate his system if it didn’t have a place for a guy like Peppers, who was just a monster at UNC.
I think that pick had more to do with McNair wanting a QB to be the 'face of the franchise' than it did the coach not having a spot for Peppers. Sounds crazy now, but watching Carr in college gave no one any reason to believe he wouldn't be a great NFL QB. This is why I'm so weary of drafting a QB in the 1st round this summer. Or ever, frankly. Hopefully Keenum will continue to play well and it won't be an issue.
At the end of the day, the gm and owner make the calls. For instance, Kubiak/Phillips wanted to keep Quin. Upper management didn't.
We have no way of knowing if that is true. Although the Quin situation was weird. Supposedly they didn't make him an offer, and Quin never asked the Texans to match (not that he is obligated to or should have). I will defend management in saying that GQ is not worth the contract he got, however, I will blast management by saying they overpaid even more for Quin's replacement.
I was going to say something about this but figured I'd get torched - but yeah - his senior season was insanely good. Even though I preferred Peppers, I never had an issue with the pick. I did a pretty quick Google search, and there was an article that indicated Casserly wanted Peppers but Capers and Palmer both wanted Carr. You know else came out that year and, frankly, would have been an even better pick (in hindsight, only - I'm not suggesting he was a viable candidate): Dwight Freeny. Holy Schmoley, he would have wreaked havoc in Capers' scheme. And that, folks, is why I hate the NFL draft.

Its all speculation, freeny may not have been the same player under capers. I believe a players development has alot to do with the system and coaching staff he has the fortune or misfortune of entering the league under. Say for instance if Kubiak got Brady and Belichick got Carr what do you think the results would have been?
