Fact: No one actually knows what is going to be there. Now, every post you are making is about it turning into a parking lot. If it turns into a park with some kind of call to the dome. Will you be happy or will you complain about that too?
Houstonians were true to their history of not giving a damn about their culture. We tout to be proud of our city, but the second we have a chance to preserve anything we drop the ball. Typical Houston culture.
The way the dome is built with so much underground, and such an involved demo I doubt that keeping the walls and top would be feasible.
You seriously think the Rodeo & Texans will ignore potential parking revenue in favor of a park to preserve some form of nostalgia AFTER a vote to save that very structure was shunned by the public?!? Be real ...it's going to be a parking lot. The citizens turned their back on the place tonight. They have all the justification in the world now to pave over the Dome.
1) It doesn't matter what the Rodeo or Texans want. They are not the decision makers here. 2) If you think this vote is lopsided, wait until the actual vote to demolish it happens. It will be a landslide in favor of "don't tear it down". The Astrodome is like the comatose patriarch of the family on life support. Nobody wants to pull the plug and the only ideas that keep getting put forth benefit a very few people at the expense of everyone else.
The ENTIRE CITY OF HOUSTON collectively turned their backs on the dome and watched it literally rot for a dozen years. Not exactly a dignified condition for an edifice of such historical and current significance. Your fire and ire would have done a lot of good ten years ago, now here at the last moment you get all supremely upset? What did YOU do to save it? Nobody else had a feasible enough idea....

Everything I saw about this convention center deal said that they "supported" the idea, not "approved" it. Regardless, they can want a parking lot all day... but just because they want it doesn't mean it is going to happen. Edit: I found a link containing something pertaining to this, but it says their lease stipulates the county would "keep all facilities, including the Arena and Astrodome, in good condition". That is obviously not the same as giving them ultimate authority on any proposed Astrodome plans. It seems it would require their approval for demolition, however, as that would definitely go against the lease agreement. This is probably why the "new dome" did not require their approval, although their endorsement was sought.
I voted to save the Dome ...the only option we are left to at this point. And we don't know if anyone had a better idea. I always thought the place would make a great Gaylord-style Hotel, since long range plans call for construction of a hotel. Why build one when the Done could be used for that. Same for a new Reliant Arena, why build that when the Dome could be repurposed to fit that use as well. After soliciting the public for proposals, Harris County rejected everyone's ideas for their own grand scheme in the end. So don't play high & mighty and ****ing tell me what did I do to save it. Nothing we could all do except vote for the County's plan or demolish it.
I'm visiting some friends in Cali and they all just said why would anyone in houston WANT to tear it down? They all said that the astrodome is one of the main things they associate with houston. I just agreed, laughed, and told them that isn't how houstonians think, they don't care. I don't live in houston anymore but it's a shame that so many people wouldn't be willing to give 8 bucks to save something like that, especially a plan that would be really helpful for the city
And that's why, because half the people who care about the Dome have moved away. Don't expect people who weren't even living in America (or even alive) when Luv Ya Blue was our city anthem to care about this issue. Houston is a different city now with different people who sometimes have different priorities. The truth is that the best chance to save the Dome would have been using it for a soccer stadium. That would have gotten the support of new Houstonians instead of ex Houstonians or old Houstonians.
Judging from Emmett's comments this morning, I don't think they have to have a vote to tear it down. They're talking about acting quickly. Of course they're politicians, so acting quickly may mean something different than its typical meaning.
