Totally agree. Why anyone would vote yes to this is beyond me. Idiots already stupidly voted to build/fund a NEW stadium to make super-rich people even more super-rich, and now you want to do that again with the old one that was "replaced"? Idiots.
What is incorrect is he's likely relating to the total demolition of Yankee Stadium in 2009, as most would since I've seen most make the same exact argument. In the 1970's it was all about bulldozing in the name of progress, hence the demise of the real monument that was Yankee Stadium. If any city knows about bulldozing history for progress in the 70's, it's Houston.
Yet it's in disrepair, like the Battleship of Texas. Let's face the real facts. This city doesn't give a flying **** about its history.

I mean....wasn't everyones reaction to going to Minute Maid Park for the first time, "man, this is way better." I was at the first ever game vs the Yankees and it was a mind-blowing difference. The dome ushered in the dark ages of sports venues.
It's actually Battleship Texas. You must not give a flying **** about history Were you this upset when they demolished the Sam Houston Coliseum?
Well what you knew as the Astrodome died like 15 years ago when they quit playing sports there and turned it into a rat farm.
This was the renovation to Yankee Stadium in 1973. http://youtu.be/hPwsl8YtxqQ A total gut & remodel to its exterior skin. Did THAT ever happen to the Astrodome? Totally different scenarios.
You want a total gut and remodel of the interior - What's the difference? The Oilers and Astros aren't moving back in there either way. You want it to be a shell (literally) of its former self. If you want nostalgia, buy one of the million shards of dome-roof the city will rip people off into buying once they bulldoze that beast down.
Its not really about sports. It is something unique to the city of Houston. I guess more strip malls, parking lots, and highways for everyone.
The Battleship Texas is not in total disrepair it underwent a refit just a few years ago...and the Monument is ok too...I just took my oldest son there last summer - it was cool. DD
I did on Nov 2nd. And when the "Astrodome Demolition" thread pops up here, I bet I'll see you and many others who voted shed a tear. Enjoy paying for your over-priced parking spot to the Texans/Rodeo on what was once hallowed grounds in this city.
This all seems very...short-sighted. I get it, it's been sitting as a derelict for years, but the architectural aspects are of exceptional importance. The Dome (in my opinion) still defines the city of Houston -- what else is there besides hot weather, concrete, strip malls, no zoning, and a shrinking NASA? Future generations will look back on this decision with immense frustration when it turns into a parking lot (though a convention center may not be the ideal use of the property). A damn shame a consortium of private investors can't find a better, profitable solution.
It underwent a repair to fix leaks in 2010z and more more we're found in last year after that renovation. Until the Battleship Texas is truly dry-docked, it will still spring leaks and be in disrepair.
