I don't live there anymore, but if I did I would vote to tear it down. It will never be a tourist attraction. Build another park in it's place with light rail access.

Then dont call people out when all you are is a penny pincher. If you are so damned inclined to not pay 8 more dollars in 1 year on your property taxes thats fine. Dont use it and vote no for it.

But when you come out and say "people who vote for this probably don't pay property taxes" that's a pretty asinine statement.

If it helps the area I am sure most people are ok with paying 8 bucks to build it. But you saved it, so go to McDonalds and buy your $8 meal.

I swear, this city is full of me first people who never give two craps about anything but themselves. No wonder why this city has a terrible culture and historical appeal.

Don't know why anyone would vote to keep it. They had groups submit formal ideas and then went with their own plan.

Next there the whole we still owe money on it and now lets spend another 217 million plus what is sure to be cost overruns.

I had previously suggested a regional transit hub as well (perhaps connected with HSR), but I doubt that was ever truly feasible. Would've been neat though.

 

I am all for historical architecture but historic stadiums are not something that any city should care about. Every historic baseball stadium has either been destroyed or renovated past the point of recognition. If they had a plan to do something with it other than make it a convention center I might be alright with it.

 

At least the people would have got some use with what is planned to be used for. Enjoy the $30 parking spaces they offer you, the consumer, with no added entertainment value all while still having the county pay off the loan. At least we would have had some use out of it with events, shows, SOMETHING. Nice. People voting no just voted for a parking lot to further line the pockets of McNair, HLSR and their Reliant cronies.

 

So whose pockets would be lined by the $200 million in renovation?

 

Is the city short on convention space? AFAIK, no circle structures are convention areas. It's insanely less practical. The Reliant Center is right there and it seems like an inconvenient place to put it anyway. I don't live in Houston anymore so I didn't really look into the plan much but if it makes fiscal sense then I hope it passes. It shouldn't pass if the primary reason is to find something it can do so it isn't torn down. It should have a good functioning purpose. There was never any ideas that were floating around that seemed remotely good.

 

I may get flamed for this but oh well... this is important to me as a hometowner.

To all of of you cheapskate bastards who voted to destroy a piece of Houston history, I hope you live next to 290 or I-45 so that we can bulldoze your houses to expand the freeway in the name of "progress" you ****ing seek.
