This is revisionist history. It was the decision like 80% of GMs would have made. People were comparing Durant to Glenn Robinson.

    No way to know that.

People, not GMs, who are paid to know better.

As for Patterson; nice to see someone with strong Houston ties take the seat. Might mean interesting times ahead for my Cougars.

Patterson built Clutchcity. Patterson was in charge of remaking the Jail Blazers which he did by getting Roy and LMA. He had nothing to do with Oden. The guy is smart but I also heard he isn't that easy to deal with. Luck would have been a good choice with his squeaky clean image, but Patterson is as shrewd as anyone. Patterson doesn't mind being the bad guy.

Who cares? He's not drafting basketball players as a college AD.

edit - that's right it was Kevin Pritchard by then as tinman noted.

    http://blog.chron.com/sportsupdate/...ve-patterson-as-athletic-director/#15450101=0

AUSTIN – Arizona State’s Steve Patterson has agreed to become the next athletic director at Texas, a UT source confirmed on Tuesday.

Patterson, a 1984 graduate of UT’s law school, has been Arizona State’s athletic director since March 2012. He previously served as president of the Portland Trail Blazers from 2003-2007, senior vice president of the Houston Texans from 1997-2003, and general manager of the Houston Rockets from 1989-’93.

With the Rockets, he helped build the team that won an NBA championship in 1994, and later was part of the group that brought the Texans and the Super Bowl to Houston. While with the Texans, Patterson played key roles in getting Reliant Stadium built.

Last month, current UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds announced his intentions to step down next summer. School president Bill Powers said he hoped to have a replacement hired by the end of this year.

West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, another UT law school alumnus and former Houston Dynamo executive, had been considered the frontrunner for the job and interviewed with UT’s advisory committee within the past week.

But Patterson, 55, impressed Powers and the committee in his interview and agreed to accept the job on Tuesday.

Patterson was GM of the Rockets from 1989-93 where he father Ray, had been the GM and president for 18 years. Steve later worked for the Aeros, the Texans and Portland Trail Blazers and ran his own sports consulting firm.

After talking to some people at Inside Texas, it seems like Patterson has a reputation as a guy who is good at cleaning house. For a program as stagnate as UT, this could be good. Disregarding UT's to-date clean Big 12 record, the football program is still woefully behind with recruiting. Rick Barnes is collecting paychecks and Augie is nearing retirement. If Patterson can get the program on firm footing while getting a new arena built, this could be a solid hire. It remains to be seen if Mack will go out on a high note or kicking and screaming, though.

My 2 cents: While I liked everything I ready about Luck, I honestly don't know enough about either guy to say "hell yeah" or "hell no." All I know is that the state of UT athletics is pathetic right now and if Patterson is the guy who will shake things up and do the dirty work, then hell I'm on board.

He's got basketball and football experience as an executive.

The dude drafted Sam Cassell and Robert Horry, traded for Otis Throrpe and got Vernon Maxwell.
