Of course he's coming back. It was a matter of when, not if. Just like the players know what they're getting into, the coaches know what they're getting into. (The idea Gary was going to resign or step down, now or later, far-fetched.)
Stress can result in the alteration of the level of the gene expression in both mice or human being, this thing can not simply be determined by the current medical approaches, so holding of the head coach job is definitely not a good thing to reduce stress.

If I'm McNair, I'm not going to pay a man to be my coach if it is a clear and present danger to his health.
People criticize him for being too caring and too loyal. If that is really his character, I doubt he will let Kubiak kill himself under his watch.
If I am McNair I would have canned Kubiak after a terrible meltdown last season. No excuse to blow home field advantage throughout the playoffs and end the season in a tailspin. That doesn't even address the complete lack of effective preparation against a less talented New England team.
UPDATE ON HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK’S CONDITION Houston Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak was released from Houston Methodist Hospital today. After multiple tests and diagnostics, it was concluded Kubiak experienced a transient ischemic attack (TIA). He is expected to make a full recovery. It has not been determined when Kubiak will return to Reliant Stadium to resume his head coaching duties. Statement from Houston Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak: “I want to thank my family, the McNair family, the Texans organization, the doctors and staff at Houston Methodist Hospital and the entire Houston community for all the love and support we have received over the past three days. I can't see that being good PR for McNair. "I know we had a rough year, but since Gary nearly died from coaching, I've decided to bring him back."
Frankly. I think more people would be pissed he's bringing back an unsuccessful coach than they would an unhealthy one. If he's not back, I imagine it'll be Kubiak's "decision" to retire. I can't see Bob pushing him out the door if he's medically cleared to coach again. Maybe it'll be an opportunity for them to bring in a legitimate (and hopefully non-pipeline) OC.
Texans fans will be very upset if Kubiak is back. Houston has a history of disapointment and failure between the Texans and Oilers... it came to a head with Bud Adams and it will with McNair too. The games will still sell out..... but the bitterness would be palpable. I remember the Oilers... there were many Houstonians that viewed them as losers...
Don't really see the benefit in keeping Kubiak, but bringing in a new play-caller/head of the offense. It basically reduces Kubiak to 2013 Jason Garrett status... and I'm still not sure what role Garrett has on the Cowboys. If Kubiak stays, he's going to have a desire to run the offense (as he has every year since the Denver Super Bowls). If he's stripped of that power, I don't see what else he brings to the table that warrants keeping him on in a power-struggle situation. Now, a new GM that takes over personnel decisions would be more intriguing.
I can't think of anything less likely to occur than McNair giving a new GM final say on all roster decisions. I'd love to see it happen, especially if he were a freshly minted Moreyball clone, but it won't.
Why is that? Because you think him and Rick are "boys"? Something has to change... if its not the coach, then it will be the players that currently the coaches mostly choose (with Rick Smith there to sign contracts, give extensions, and work the cap). There looks to be a lot of turnover in this roster coming up this off-season, regardless of who the coach/GM is... and the question is do you want to have the same people in charge of that process that have been doing so for the last 8 years.
No, because NFL head coaches have way too much power, and the next head coach that McNair hires will enjoy the same perks that Kubiak has. If I owned the team, I'd look for a Morey clone, and do it the exact same way, bring him in and let him work under a established old timer for a couple of years before handing him the reigns. He'd have final say on cap, contracts, trades, free agents, and the draft, and that would be made clear to any HC who wants the job. The coaching staff would be sought out for input, of course, but final say would go to the GM.
When Capers was the HC, he didn't hold all the cards... that was Casserly. That system wasn't perfect either, since Casserly had too much say in personnel decisions... and really didn't have all that much experience in how to build a franchise from scratch. I still can't believe they passed on Julius Peppers... who is still causing havoc today in the NFL, long after most other players in that draft have fizzled out. I have a hard time believing Carr was a Capers choice... he would have loved Peppers. I don't think McNair enjoyed having a non-football mind in charge of most football decisions, thus they let Kubiak be GM/Coach... and Kubes brought in Smith afterwards to deflect some of the attention, and help manage the cap.
people dont speak for all fans when they say "houston fans dont want Kubiak back" I would love to see him come back and groom Case.
