How could this happen? This guy jogs every day, eats the heart healthy food line at Reliant, and is in great shape. He is only 52 years old. WTF?
dang.. arian said it best: "I don't take life too serious, none of us make it out alive." kubiak needs to ride off into the sunset and retire. only 52, should have many more years left. if he decides he cannot give up coaching, perhaps a QB Coach role would fit him best. hell, i would love for him to stay with the texans as the QB Coach.
it's called life. it might happen to you. or me. or someone else. we will die. "there is only one God, and his name is death."
Guys I think Bandwagoner is looking for a medical explanation. When we think of strokes we imagine some sedentary morbidly obese 3 packs a day heavy drinker type. Not someone who seems to be in good physical condition.
The news article says he had a "mini-stroke" http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/sports&id=9312851
TIA's (Transient Ischemic Attack) is a result of patients experiencing "focal neurological symptoms" that last either a few minutes or less than 24 hours. This is due to a lack of blood flow to certain part of the brain(cerebral ischemia). They present like classical stroke patients, but do not have permanent symptoms of stroke. What doctors were in the hunt for was to determine what the cause for the TIA was. TIA like strokes are most often a result of an embolus (a clot that has dislodged from another site such as vessels in the neck or areas in the heart). Since being admitted, the doctors were most likely trying to look for the source of a clot, by checking his heart, neck vessels, etc. Some of the risk factors for this is smoking, high cholesterol, and most importantly long term hypertension. The most important thing i want everyone to learn from TIAs and strokes are how to identify it. The key to saving a person is to be able to recognize key symptoms/and signs of a stroke. STROKES think FAST: Face, Arm, Speech and Time Look for changes on your face(like it looks like its sagging on one side); If you feel one side of your body/arm cant be moved even though your consciously trying to do so; What ever conversation you are having is no longer understood by the other person(you start slurring); Time to ER and treatment is key-> you must get help rapidly.
I'm no doctor (but I do play one on TV)...but I'm assuming stress is a contributing factor to this. Because of that, i'd be done. No way I'd eff around with that. There's no job in the world worth cashing in the rest of my life...getting to see my kids grow up..perhaps meeting my grandkids. No thanks.
Being a head coach in the NFL is one of the most stressful jobs there is. I wish him the best, but if he comes back... it will just be a matter of time before something worse could happen.
with those odds, no way he can be a HC. there is 168 hours in 1 week, most head coaches put in about 100 hours. add the fact that we suck which just piles on more stress. me thinks we've seen the last of Kubes as a HC anywhere.
Mini stroke? One in three? I think that's the end of Kubiak's career as a head coach, here or anywhere else. If he keeps coaching, he won't make 60, and you can bet his doctors and family will advise/beg/order him to find a new career. Everyone knows my opinion of Kubiak as a coach, but let's be honest, he was going to be fired whether he had a stroke or not. This medical crisis won't have anything to do with him being replaced, which was/is inevitable. It does, however, eliminate any chance of him being a head coach anywhere else. But Kubiak, like Schaub, still has a very comfortable life ahead of him. I wish both the best, but I won't pretend to be sad that the Texans are going to look completely different next season, because the status quo is completely unacceptable, given how bad the team is.
I'm ok with Kubiak being back next year and being given a chance to turn things around (especially if the team shows marked improvement the final 8 weeks), but I can't in good conscience hope that it happens now. Life is bigger than football. Coach a high school team, stay on as some kind of QB-only coach, special assistant, etc... But do not put a headset back on and spend 12 hour days at Reliant stadium.
