Gizmodo gave it a much better review. The thing about the Verge is that they say the camera is poor but the pictures look pretty good to me in the samples they give and they don't really give anything to back up the battery details. At least in the forums people have been posting up their battery stats which help. It's pretty up and down though as it does depend on a person's usage but so far battery life looks better than average. Gizmodo reviewer said he made it to 1am but would give more details in the follow up. I've got my N5's here still in the box. The cases haven't come yet and i'm weary about opening it up.
Hahahaha...i'm not even looking in it's direction. I want to give my girl's phone to her first so she can have that feeling of getting the latest and greatest first but i don't want to give her the phone w/o a case. I'd be sweating bullets watching her carry her phone around w/o her case.
Take pictures of the official unboxing and post it here, you know you want to. Peer pressure!! Spoiler I admire your patience, wait for the cases to arrive lol.
woot went home at lunch to check if it arrived, and indeed it did! Just got a new sim card from tmobile and am downloading all the updates. First impression so far, awesome keypad/dialer and so far the phone is exceptionally responsive, really smooth and fast.
Mine showed up today and first impressions are I preferred my Note 2. I will live with this one for a while to get more familiar with pure android before I make any decisions though.
Trust me you can use it without a case. I went 2 weeks without one when I first got my nexus 4 and that was more dangerous given the glass black.
I never use a case with any of my phones. What are you guys doing that you need a case? I dropped a Note 2, Galaxy 2, and Droid Razr on concrete before.
Glass cracks easily man. I'm pretty careful overall, but there are days where I get out of my car with the phone on my lap and it just drops to the floor. There are other days where I keep my phone and keys in the same pocket. And then there are times when the phone vibrates on my desk and the next thing I know it's on the floor. It's the same reason why I wear shoes on my feet or wax my car. Certain things just need some form of protection. I'm not talking army/otterbox protection, just something minimal and light. I keep my Nexus 7 naked because 1) price is cheap, 2) it never leaves the house, and 3) I charge it wirelessly. It's in pristine condition, which is why I'm suggesting leaving the N5 without a case for a while is okay. Spoiler
I'm not sure those bumper cases will keep your screen (or back) from cracking. Not much shock absorption, they will keep the edge from being nicked up after a drop. The Droid had a Kevlar back and the Samsungs were plastic which doesn't transfer all of the shock from a fall like a metal phone (iPhone) does. Possibly I have just been lucky.
I do agree with you. Gorilla glass 3 is pretty durable, so I'm not worried about the screen. It's just scratches on the back and minor protection in case it does fall from my lap onto concrete. Plus I feel some of these cases offer a better grip. I bought the Ringke Slim FWIW.
Typing this post with the Nexus 5. It was delivered this afternoon. I'll post initial impressions for now and a more detailed impression maybe tomorrow. Keep in mind my point of view is coming from the HTC one. Performance: THE FASTEST AND MOST FLUID PHONE I have ever owned or played with. I have experience with iOS and android. Zero hick ups. Scrolling is smooth and what really surprised me is how fast app switching is. It truly is a beast multitasker. Build quality: Keep in mind I'm coming from the One which is considered the best built phone along with the iPhone. This doesn't feel like a cheap plastic phone like the galaxy series. It feels durable and light. The design is quite simplistic but it makes it look rather classy. It's a design that's hard the find fault in. The only issue I have is the raised camera lens which isn't that big of a deal. The design of this phone centers around the screen. Minimal bezel helps with this. And yes it does have a notification light on the bottom just like the Nexus 4 with full rbg colors. Display: Again I'm coming from the HTC one which many consider the best display on a phone. Its a gorgeous screen however it doesn't have the saturation and viewing angles of the One. It's still a great screen with accurate color reproduction. I would say its better than the galaxy s4's screen but just below the One's. It's a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the washed out Nexus 4 which I also owned. Software: Its 4.4... Many of you know the improvements. The one thing I missed most about Nexus phones when I had my One was software buttons. HTC really screwed up with the weird config of hardware buttons on the One. It made muktitaking and accessing Google Now a chore relative to the Nexus 5. It almost made me barely use Google now. I love these software buttons. Makes mulitaking damn fast and easy. One of my favorite additions to 4.4 is the new phone apk. Searching for businesses and their phone numbers is so much easier with this new dialer. I can just launch the dialer and type dominos and it will pop up with the nearest dominos location and phone number. The new launcher is going to be a hit or miss with some. I personally love how fast it is to access Google now through the launcher with a swipe to the right. One thing I miss was how the top right data icons on the status bar would be colored when its properly connected to the internet. Camera: Haven't played with it enough for an impression. Battery: Same Verdict: steel of the century for the 350 dollar unlocked price. If any one has any questions shoot away...
Of course, the UPS guy was really late today, compared to the average day. Got my phone maybe ~30 minutes ago, so haven't had much time to play around with it, but I more or less feel the same as fchowd0311 (although didn't have a One, just upgraded from a Nexus 4). Took a couple pictures of my dog, and they seem a lot better than the Nexus 4 (not saying much). Camera app does seem to be the problem though (some pics were crap, but because of the app I think, not the camera). Really enjoyed what little time I've spent with it. Screen is really nice, and I like some of the cosmetic touches in 4.4. Icons look really nice.
Is anyone else getting slow LTE speeds with this on T-Mobile? I tried a few Speedtests, and I'm getting network errors and/or slow results (like 2-5 mbps). 3G+ seemed faster than this. Thought I saw others talking about it and how T-Mobile might be assuming these are Nexus 4 units or something. Wasn't sure if it was something like that, or just a fluke. Haven't had to test LTE in my area before either, though I think I have a good signal (3-4 bars with LTE). I browsed a bit on LTE, and it seemed fine there, but hardly a good test of LTE.
using gophone (att) lte here in galveston. speeds are good. loving this tuxedo nex5 thus far. diggin' hangouts/messaging merge (not sure what the verge hate was about). i am however missing the active display from my moto x. playing with it some more while watching the rox.
