It was not going to be the FG's fault if your prior carrier cancelled the plan or changed the plan to comply with ACA.... along with the rate jump.

NY Times editorial pokes a hole in the GOP argument about cancelled policies:

Aren't most arguments against canceled policies as opposed to canceled policy holders? In no uncertain terms, the president said that people could keep their policies if they like them no matter what (not true) and folks are pointing that out. I don't recall anyone pointing out that policy holders would be unable to stay with their same company which seems to be the crux of this article.

Aren't people being "forced" to buy more comprehensive policies... which are necessarily more expensive?

On the one hand it's good, on the other hand.... it's coercion.

So is mandatory homeowner's insurance, mandatory automobile insurance, etc. You have to have a minimum policy to protect yourself and others.

    Yes, you are.

If you own a home, it is mandatory to have homeowner's insurance. If you own a car, you are required to carry automobile insurance. If you will use the healthcare industry, you are now required to carry health insurance, just as it should be.

What part of "required" don't you understand? When something is required and you choose not to do it, there is a penalty, or it wouldn't qualify as "required."

How does a medical plan protect others? You have to buy homeowner's insurance because the banks need to protect their investment and people on your premises could be hurt. You have to buy auto insurance because third parties should be compensated if you injure them or their property while operating your vehicle. Physical damage coverage is not mandatory on auto policies, just liability.

Key theme there that has nothing to do with health insurance, which is strictly first party insurance.

Also, my friend was forced to purchase mental health insurance and something else (don't remember what he told me) that he didn't want or need. (36 y/o male). So yes, he got to pay 3x more for his plan AND buy more. This was not how this was sold to the American public.
