James Johnson is a 26-year old, 6-foot-8 power forward out of Wake Forest. He was taken in the first round in 2009 (#16 overall by Chicago) and has bounced around -- he was in the Atlanta Hawks camp and was just cut last month.

    His college highlights:

How did RGV end up with such a high pick? Hasn't the team been excellent? Thus, no high pick?

They got it in a trade with the Reno Bighorns. I can't remember which deal... I'd need to go back and look.

They just took Dario Hunt with the 16th pick of the first round -- another 6-8 forward (out of Nevada).

Highlights after his sophomore season in 2011.

I don't fully understand how there is a draft for players that have already played for teams and yet have not made NBA rosters. Is that why?

He played well for Toronto a few years back. Great pickup for the Vipers!

FYI: James Johnson also happens to be a former national karate champion.

If nothing else, the Vipers could probably win if a fight breaks out during a game.

He is the perfect "enforcer" to sign to a 10-day contract for a rivalry game. Strong body, great martial arts skills, and little basketball value so you don't care he gets ejected or suspended.

James Johnson has "potential" as a stretch 4. He's mighty athletic with long arms, and can make plays defensively.

I would've thought he'd be good enough to make an NBA roster... He played 16 minutes per game last season, 25 the season before. Pretty useful pickup for the Vipers I guess!

I think this may have been that trade where RGV traded Reno their original 2nd round pick back to them in exchange for their 1st round pick - straight up if I recall. It seemed bizarre. There was a thread about it here.

    ** EDIT **

Here you go - see Clutch's response at the end of the thread : http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=232776

The issue is he's never been able to shoot 3s in his entire life.
