The GF is writing a paper on the death penalty, and i thought we could kick it around here. What are y'alls stance on this subject? opinions?
-is not a deterrent to murder -is more expensive -targets the poor and mentally ill -can never be 100% accurate -a black man who commits an identical crime is far more likely to be sentenced to death than a white man -it's COMPLETELY ARBITRARY and ultimately NON-REVERSIBLE. i think it's truly barbaric and so ****ed up, but people with a thirst for vengeance usually can't be reasoned with. i wrote a couple research papers about it in college. my aunt was stabbed to death in 2004 by her husband...facing that alongside my family is what made me realize that him dying can't bring her back, and won't solve anything. i went from passionately pro-capital punishment to passionately against. i'd urge you to read up on the facts as well as some individual accounts of those waiting on death row from human rights sites. you can never be 100% accurate, you're playing with someone's life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_Todd_Willingham
The death penalty is the dumb. The state shouldn't have the right to end your life as punishment for a crime. Plus all that stuff finals points out.
I thought I was lazy Googling other opinions when I had to write my papers 12 years ago rather than reading entire friggin books on the subject matter. Research is a lost art to many...
Not sure if you're implying i'm lazy because i started this thread, but i'm not writing a paper.....and if you weren't my bad!
She pretty much agrees with all these points but for some reason she wanted to write from the other perspective so, her stance is for the penalty. I myself am on the fence. Seems like most females are against and males tend to be for. Sorry about your aunt
Is death penalty needed (sometime) by the victim family to move on, to have peace of mind? Generally against it. Can be for it if.. - Death penalty only available when with NO doubt. Guilty without a reasonable doubt is not good enough. We know Jury gets it wrong. - Victim family has the power to pardon. If they can forgive, society has no said. I personally prefer a limited lifetime of "slave" (put them to actual real work that is productive to society) than to the death penalty, except when it's fall into the above.
That's where I disagree. Finals's arguments to me are arguments for limiting the death penalty. It's not an argument for banning it. And the state should be under no obligation to relinquish the right to execute those who would grievously harm it or society. After all, even the Norwegians shot Quisling.
I am in favor of the death penalty in theory, but I do not trust our government or legal system with that sort of power. So, I guess I would like to see that power taken out of the hands of our courts, but I also think some crimes warrant death. Honestly, in certain circumstances, I don't see anything wrong with vigilante killings -- especially in cases of rape and murder.
The only way I am for the death penalty is if there is absolutely, positively no way to keep other people (including prisoners) safe from them. Countries like the USA should have no problem with that.
Favor for death penalty for only a few circumstances: Prisoner is a serial murderer/rapist. Prisoner murders someone in prison. Also, organ donation should be mandatory for prisoners that serve life sentences and those that are executed.
