This makes absolutely no sense to the point. Does that mean every game that we win, it makes no difference how the individual players actually play? And that no one can debate the performance of players as long as we win?
McHale is a genius. He showed the bench players he had faith in them to hold off a comeback and finish games, and at the same time rested all of our starters.
Dallas' "comeback" had nothing to do with either team's lineups and everything to do with the nappy headed dread guy having the best 5 minute stretch of his life.
A win is a win. Time to move on. When he loses next time by doing that then they'll be something to get angry about. But he probably won't.
Well pimpn LOL I dont think Coach learnt from a mistake that he might not think exist. Meaning he will do this again like every other coach would. Especially on a back to back. 82 games bruh and you want to at least try to keep your players legs fresh. But I here what you are saying. I would say the mop up players needs to get it together. LOL
So you think that if we played Brooks, Brewer, DMo, Jones and Smith against other teams, that they wouldn't lose leads like that again? That they would actually do well together as a lineup? Do you believe that is a balanced and good lineup to play EVER?
Rest starters for next game. The bench needs to step up and be able to close games. The Mavs bench had nothing to lose and played freely by taking 3's that if they weren't going in this game would not have been close down the stretch. McHale did the right thing.
That's my point of the thread actually. I'm hoping that he realizes that he almost lost that game last night with that lineup in too early, and that he won't repeat it again. That's all that I'm trying to point out. I think some people are confusing this with the FIRE McHale thread. But that's too be expected for apologists.
That's typically the strategy for all teams that are down late in games, so it's not to be unexpected or unplanned for if you are a good coach. A great coach will know this and plan for it no matter what lineup is in and even if the other teams bench is in. Many teams in the NBA come back and win games with this strategy. It's not uncommon or anything.
You must have just arrived in the thread. This has been agreed to OVER AND OVER AND OVER in this thread as still the most important thing.
LOL MOVE ON we were far from losing that game and that lineup won us the game with an 8 pt lead considering its the first night of a back to back, with that big of a lead, small time left, opponents best player fouled out, the quality of line up they were up against he did the right and should continue doing so it's not mchale's fault dmo and tj kept leaving chowder open on the arc
In my mind, Mchale is becoming an elite coach. Watching our offense work, an offense that looks even better than Adelman's, and watching him doing everything he can to make Asik and Howard work, while still getting wins, shows that he really knows what he's doing. The guy's a heck of a coach. I really, really like this team.
Sure you can talk about the players all you want, but the OP was talking about McHale. Re: The players, remember - they are all the end of rotation guys, so they will not play as well collectively as they would if they were inserted with the better players. Smith, Tjones, Dmo are all decent players who would thrive playing with the starters, but playing all together are not going to look good. But perspective is hard to come by these days. DD
The point wasn't we lost...duh. The point was the "potential" to lose based on a bad lineup of Brooks, Brewer, DMo, Jones and Smith going into the game with almost 4 minutes to play and only a 17 point lead...which they let get as close as 5 points with 21 seconds left to play. If you don't think that is close enough to lose a game, ask the Spurs about game 6 in last year's finals and if it means anything to them. You are welcome to move on if you have nothing else to add.
Don Imus, is that you? OP, it was fine and expected for McHale to pull his starters. This was the first of 4 games in 5 nights & we were hitting the road after the game (next 3 are all road games (Jazz, Clippers, Blazers). Why would McHale want to risk further injuries to an already limping and injured squad by putting them in against Mavs' bench? You safeguard your players' health in garbage time & have faith that your bench closes out the win. Which they did.
If you read the whole thread, you would know that you are making some of my points. I never said I had a problem with him playing some of those guys, I said that he should have subbed some of them and left in a couple or 3 of the starters to work with them and maintain the lead until at least the 2 minute mark. The problem was putting in a lineup (Brooks, Brewer, DMo, Jones and Smith) that had absolutely NO time together as a unit in preseason or probably practice as well, did not have balance, and went in too early in the game with not a large enough lead for NBA standards. It almost cost us a game, although it didn't. It is simply something for Coach to learn from hopefully. A A bad decision is a bad decision whether you win or lose from it.
You really reached with that comparison. Situation was the same at all. How about, you come back and make this thread when we actually lose a game we should have won because BOTH teams pulled out their starters in practically-garbage time.
I honestly do get this logic. Many have said it. It is what is NORMALLY and USUALLY done. The key point is who to sub and win, with what type of lead. Of course you want to get your starters, and especially superstars rest before you head out on the road in a four games in 5 nights stretch. But you can never forget or sacrifice the game in front of you as a win to do so. You ALWAYS make sure that the game at hand is completely in the books as a win first, and NEVER let it be in jeopardy or question...just to prepare for the next series of games. McHale didn't do that last night, even though we won the game. That is my point. Not that the superstars or starters shouldn't get any rest before such a tough stretch.
