What contract? He's no longer employed by the Mavs. Seeing as how they didn't honor the full length of his old contract, I seriously doubt their termination agreement included a clause saying Rosas couldn't work for another team. No way would he and his lawyers agree to that.
I don't know what is standard in NBA. In other areas, a 1 year non-compete would not be unexpected for a guy at the position like GM.
I don't think the NBA allows non competes. Either way Rosas wasn't a GM. He became an assistant to a GM Donnie Nelson
Wow. Feel bad for the guy...gets a big break and it looks like it came crashing down. I thought the timing of it was weird the way that the offseason was already pretty much over when he got hired. Did we actually fill his spot or did Morey just have to pick up the slack for now? If not, I hope we get him back.
Meh. He was sent there as a favor from Morey to train Dallas' staff over the offseason. He'll be back with the Rockets soon.
Holy $hit!! This is crazy!! I can't believe they are parting ways! I hope he comes back to Houston. I was really upset with losing both Hinkie and Rosas. Ruined my week that week. Hope Morey brings him right back, that would be the icing on the cake with this offseason!
Cuban is cold blooded. Hires the guy to pump him for information and steal our innermost secrets. When he has no more use for him, he lets him go. Ok, I admit it, I'm a conspiracy theorist.

I am pretty sure that if the Mavs are going to require that he sit out a year from working for another NBA team, they most likely will pay him his salary or some agreed-upon sum for that time.
That would mean he couldn't leave the team on his own accord to take a similar position with another team. But he was either fired or his contract was terminated "by mutual agreement." Either way, that original contract is no longer enforceable. If they signed a termination agreement, Gerrson would have to agree to a new non-compete clause.
Seriously. I think RV6 got it right: Gerrson probably wanted to look at a rebuild and Cuban foolishly thinks there's still enough of a core there to mount another championship run.
Probably found out Gerson was too smart to take a backseat to Donnie Nelson. Plus Mark Cuban likes to run everything himself, so it would make sense to hire a GM who caters to his whims instead of a thinker.
Mavs and GM Rosas part ways DALLAS -- Well, that didn't last long. According to ESPN, the Dallas Mavericks and general manager Gersson Rosas have decided to part ways. The surprising and abrupt move comes just 69 days after the Mavs hired Rosas away from the Houston Rockets. At the time the Mavs hired Rosas, they were gushing about him being considered as one of young, rising superstar executives in the NBA. He also was the highest ranking Hispanic front office executive in the entire NBA. Rosas had reported to Mavs president Donnie Nelson, who used to double as the Mavs' general manager before the team hired Rosas. At the time Rosas, 35, was hired, coach Rick Carlisle said: “Donnie is a long-time admirer of Gersson’s work and has spoken frequently about his desire to one day bring him to the Mavs organization. I commend Donnie and (owner) Mark (Cuban) for being able to recruit him to Dallas.” Rosas' departure is even more surprising since it comes on the day before the Mavs open the regular season at home against the Atlanta Hawks. -- Dwain Price / @dwainprice http://sportsblogs.star-telegram.com/mavs/2013/10/mavs-and-gm-rosas-part-ways.html
