I agree with both of you. Regardless of how many games they win in a weak Big 12 this year, the team is in the decline in so many measurements. Recruiting is down, player development, wins, players getting drafted -- in any way you measure the health of a program, the team is not what it once was.

Mack needs to step down before the program declines any further. Winning games in a weak Big 12 does not mean that their fortunes have reversed.

If Mack says he wants to coach one more season, isn't that considered clarity? But I think you're overstating things a bit. Of course anyone would want clarity before taking a job and he will most likely get some, but don't think he would turn down the job (if he really wants it) just because of that.

And very few AD's come into big universities and immediately clear house unless things are real bad. If the sources in the OB article are correct, then I think Luck has already acknowledged that a change may not be completely up to him (or immediate).

Edit: Should probably clarify that I want a new HC and think the program needs new blood and direction. With that said, I have come to terms that if Mack wins the Big 12 and somehow a BCS bowl game, then no way he gets ousted, he may leave on his own, but it will be up to him.

IF they do win the big 12 and a BCS bowl then isn't that what we would want out of a coach? Wasn't that the goal coming into the season and what we were working toward the last few years? They are still one of the best recruited schools in the country and they have a ton of juniors on the team.

IMO the goal should be establishing a process to lay the foundation for success - something Texas clearly didn't have this year, and something Mack hasn't really had (except for hte "get the best players and hope something comes togehter) for quite some time (or ever, basically). That was a successful strategy back in the 00's, but really doesn't seem to work anymore.

In a world where the gap between the haves & the have-nots has eroded (mostly because recruiting advantage alone doesn't cut it anymore; the high school game has evolved and there's tons of great players available, accordingly the gap between the top and bottom recruiting classses is not as great as it was a decade ago) it's important to be on par in terms of process (e.g. a defined system/identity, and getting players/having practices etc to fit that system/identity).

If Texas is somehow able to cobble together a successful season from the ruins of September, then great - but it doesn't really appear the underlying issues were/have been fixed. So you can give out a "reward" year to delay the inevitable, but why? There's a good chance you're looking at another 2010.

We were trying to figure out why Mack burned Swopes red shirt and one line of thought was Mack wants him to play this year... as a starter. McCoy can obviously play well for a few games, but his limitations were very obvious -- 1-2 great throws equal 4-5 bad ones later in the game. Of course this also means they have no intention of putting Ash back out there.

Think this speaks more about Ash than Swoopes/McCoy. Hopefully Mack learned from the K-State game a couple years ago when Colt went down. If you're forced to play Swoopes, at least it won't be his first snaps ever taken.

Exactly this. There is nothing in this year's team or anything about the process Mack is going through to suggest that, if and when other Big12 teams become good again, Texas would be competitive. This just seems like a bunch of talent thrown together, try a bunch of different coaches to see what works, and if everything falls their way and the rest of the conference sucks, they can be decent.

I know people who know this guy fairly well. I know people who've done business with him.

I have never heard anyone say a bad thing about this guy. He seems to be a man of integrity and the kind of guy you'd be proud to have representing you.
