    You're right, which only proves that the government has no business using acts of terror or gun crimes to justify whittling away at our constitutional rights.

    I missed this one, so I'll address it in a new post. A more honest analogy would be banning alcohol because it's directly related to auto fatalities, spousal abuse, and other acts of violence, but we already tried banning booze, and the results were disastrous.

    There was a large problem in the 1970s and 1980 s with kids poisoning themselves with bug sprays and cleaning products. We did not rush to government intervention to ban those products. We instead educated parents on how to store these products responsibly to reduce the risk to kids.

    Same basic concept applies here.

    It is harder to shoot yourself with a shotgun, but just as easy, if not easier, for a kid playing with a shotgun to shoot one of his friends.

    The bottom line is that education and responsibility are the keys.

    I do believe the solution to keeping both sides of this issue happy is the development of more advanced stun guns. They need more range, more, power, and more shots, but they could provide a viable alternative to firearms - eventually.

    Children = 0-19 now? brilliant.

    Give up your household cleaners first, since they of course are much more dangerous than firearms, and THEN go after guns.

    Unless you aren't interested in preventing deaths, just getting rid of guns?

    The gun lobby, um the NRA, does plenty to fight off any gun control whatsoever. They have a scorecard for politicians and attack the ones that don't score well. Americans overwhelmingly favor universal background checks.

    Bug sprays like automobiles and chainsaws and baseball bats and hammers have primary purposes that don't involve killing. Second they can't be used to massacre people in droves. The next hammer massacre of 20 school children will be the first. There is no education or training required to buy or own a gun.

    5 thousand kids, or people under 21, die from alcohol poisoning.

    I disagree with your assessment. You say it's more "honest" but I say it's just more friendly to your point of view.

    Alcohol is not a weapon. You do not pour alcohol on a room full of fellow citizens and kill them. A misused car is indeed a weapon. A misused car can cause a lot of death and destruction.

    What is truly dishonest in your post, if I may, is the use of "banning." Nobody I know wants to ban firearms. Why anyone fears universal background checks is truly beyond me.

    Meanwhile, an analogy to assault rifles in our current conversation could go like this: you can drive any car or truck that you like but non-military personnel cannot own a tank.

    I am pro-gun, grew up with guns, and have always been a gun owner, for what it's worth. Your refusal to admit the NRA's strong-arming of the country is kind of weird. The "anti-gun" (sic) crowd is incredibly weak in this country, obviously, and they own no politicians. The same cannot be said, just as obviously, for the NRA.
