Ah, man you left off one of the best American bands of the last 20 years, the Black Crowes. For me they are one of the all time greats from the states, yeah I know they ripped off the Stones and Faces when they started, but go and listen to Amorica and the follow up 3 Snakes and 1 Charm, stellar stellar albums!! And live from 92-97 and again in 05-06 there was no one who could touch them!

Localalien, some great points made on this debate! Looks like you know yer stuff!! :D

Yes, but REM asked Radiohead to open for them. And as much as l like several of the Crowes tunes, REM trumps them hands-down.

Oh, my Lord- please, how about:

South Central Rain, Pretty Persuasion, Fall On Me, It's The End of the World As We Know It, Driver 8, Can't Get There from Here, Radio Free Europe, The Finest Worksong, Orange Crush, The One I Love, Losing My Religion, Man on the Moon, Superman, Pop Song 89, What's The Frequency, Kenneth, Bang and Blame....

That's like saying Pink Floyd is irrelevant because they don't put out albums anymore or that Pearl Jam is the same because their albums don't sell the way they used to.

You might have a case for Oasis vs. Radiohead, but there's no debate about REM's place in R&R history:

R.E.M.'s early breakthrough success served as an inspiration for other alternative bands. Spin referred to the "R.E.M. model"—career decisions that R.E.M. made which set guidelines for other underground artists to follow in their own careers. Spin's Charles Aaron wrote that by 1985, "They'd shown how far an underground, punk-inspired rock band could go within the industry without whoring out its artistic integrity in any obvious way. They'd figured out how to buy in, not sellout-in other words, they'd achieved the American Bohemian Dream." Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate said, "They invented a whole new ballgame for all of the other bands to follow whether it was Sonic Youth or the Replacements or Nirvana or Butthole Surfers. R.E.M. staked the claim. Musically, the bands did different things, but R.E.M. was first to show us you can be big and still be cool." Biographer David Buckley stated that between 1991 and 1994, a period that saw the band sell an estimated 30 million albums, R.E.M. "asserted themselves as rivals to U2 for the title of biggest rock band in the world."

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was a vocal fan of R.E.M., and had plans to collaborate on a musical project with Stipe before his death in April 1994. Cobain told Rolling Stone in an interview earlier that year, "I don’t know how that band does what they do. God, they’re the greatest. They’ve dealt with their success like saints, and they keep delivering great music."

They're the greatest. Yep, they're up there.

REMs last album was extremely good. I liked it much more than In Rainbows.

I would guess you haven't heard more than those few TBC tunes you like, there is waaaay more to them than She talks to Angels, Remedy, Twice as Hard etc. And honestly when TBC started they tried to sound like REM and they Replacements, so that says something.

Yeah and Spin has also called Radiohead the greatest band on the planet or something to that effect. A couple of times if I'm not mistaken.

For the record, I don't like REM. Their stuff bores me, always has. Not saying they suck, just not my cup of tea.

What's funny is that for two bands that some here say suck, this sure is a long thread. ;)

Absolutely not- have Shake Your Money Maker, Southern Harmony, and Amorica. I've heard plenty of songs off the other 3 or 4 they have. I think they are a very good band- the first 2 were always on rotation for me back in the 90s. But, I mean, REM's first 3 albums were just as good as the Crowes, and then you have Document, Life's Rich Pageant, Green, Automatic, Out of Time, Hi-Fi - there's just too many great albums from them for me to say that the Crowes are better.

But I'm extremely biased about REM, so I can't make an objective comparison. Put it this way- if I have a choice between Murmur and Led Zeppelin IV, I'm picking Murmur- ain't a whole lot of people gonna agree with me.

Plus, I do think that there can be bands I would acknowledge as almost being better, technically speaking, than bands I like, but sometimes certain groups are favorites for sentimental reasons.

The Smithereens are a perfect case-in-point. They played so many club dates in Houston in the late 80s and early 90s (Sam's Boat, Cardis, etc.), I must have seen them at least 7-8 times. top 5 favorite live band. have all 7 albums/CDs.

Now, if you were to ask me who's better, Pink Floyd or The Smithereens, I'd have to say Floyd because they were more groundbreaking, hugely popular and influential, extremely unique, great songwriting, etc. But on my list of personal favorites, The Smithereens ranks ahead of Floyd.

So, there are some groups that are personal favorites regardless of the enormity of popularity (The Verve- definitely), and there are others who are favorites and who also happen to be legendary (The Doors- absolutely).

OOPS- yeah, after Automatic- well, you have Kenneth, Bang and Blame, some from Hi-Fi, Imitation of Life- well, with them, I think they lost something when the drummer quit. Never really the same after that. But still better than a lot of stuff out there.

the reason why the black crowes went MIA was because Chris went solo and got married to goldie hawn's daughter... who could probably sing better than Yoko Ono and is much better looking

Finally started to get into Oasis a lot more, always liked em but never really looked at their other stuff.

I think Oasis blows Radiohead out of the water. Its a lot about personal preference though, I only like about 2-3 Radiohead songs.

The Galagher brothers (Liam especially) were assholes at times but their music is much better than Radiohead's. Their antagonistic style is what alienated a lot of people here in the U.S and is why you don't hear a lot of their other stuff more.

Radiohead is possibly the most influential rock band of this era. Who the **** is Oasis?

Oasis and Radiohead wouldn't be around if it wasn't for pioneers like Lou Reed.

    carry on...
