Who has it better than us? We got two PG's that can cause problems for opposing teams, and they can play together too. Too bad for fans who have a different agenda, who don't care how good the team does as long as their "guy" starts. Go ahead and attack my grammar but you know I am right lol
I hardly see anyone mentioning Lin as an elite playmaker. All ppl saying is Lin is a better playmaker than Beverly and he is probably a better player offensively than Beverly at this point. His defense is considerably better at least in this pre-season. I don't get where you get that elite playmaking crap from. I don't see anyone compare his playmaking to CP3 or Rondo. Back to the topic, what Lin has to do is continuing to get better, fixing the jumper shots. He will be playing for another team as a starter in a season or two. He can't fixate on current situation because coaching stuff has no confidence in him whatsoever and there is nothing else he could do except getting better.
Bev... With all the top pgs there are in the league, I like Bev starting the game off with tough D against them. And then with the second unit I like that Lin has more freedom to do the things he likes to do without having to defer. He fits good with that second unit.
The thing to understand about this issue is that: 1) Neither Lin nor Beverly can say they are much better than the other player. 2) They have different strengths and weaknesses. 3) Beverly's strengths complement Harden, thus the starting 5 better. 4) Lin's strengths are maximized when he is the focal point of the offense (see Spurs game) 5) Things will figure themselves out throughout the course of the season.
There's a decent amount of better PG rotations, just off the top of my head. Rondo and Bradley Irving and Jarrett Jack Chris Paul and Darren Collison Westbrook and Reggie Jackson Vasquez and Isaiah Thomas I'd say we have an above average PG rotation though.
But our PG's don't have to make the difference like most of those teams. I live in Sacramento so I am laughing at the fact that you included Sacs PG's. Every Rockets PG on our team now is better than Thomas
I don't think anyone thinks Lin has a better chance of starting, and definitely not a lock. But the poll is asking who should be the starting PG
4) Lin's strengths complement Howard, thus the starting 5 better. Also, letting Harden rest more on offense so he has more energy for defense is better too. I don't have much confidence in McHale playing the matchups correctly, but Beverley should play more when we need ball pressure defense and Lin should play more when we don't.
Yes, but it provides some parameter of quantitative measurement. A thread without a poll doesn't provide aggregation of data in the same context.
I think the poll is misleading, in terms of the PG rotation, we should have the third option, which is James Harden. If we are running 3 guard rotation, we have already seen how good Jeremy/Beverley pair, and now we are talking about James/Jeremy pair vs. James/Beverley pair. Since James is playing PG/SG combination guard, thus it is really not the question Jeremy vs. Beverley, who is better. It is more of James is better with whom, and which style coach McHale would like to go with. From last season, we already know that when Jeremy play with James, James could be more efficient, which means he would shoot better, and don't need to do everything. However, James' touches got limited, he is sharing PG role with Jeremy, and not all the offense start from James. So that's against coaches' idea about "put the ball in James hand". When Beverley play with James, though his FG% dropped, but he got to shoot a lot more, and most of the offense start from James, so he has better control. Basically he is playing PG and SG and Beverley is playing as an auxiliary guard. Even though the whole team share the floor got better FG% with Jeremy and lower FG% with Beverley, but that could be the effect of James dominate the ball, thus might not due to limitation of Beverley. But since Beverley ensure James dominate the ball, it does not matter too much, as long as James could handle that much work load, and could last the full season, and he now got Dwight's help, so he could handle everything easier. Dwight don't play make for the team, so the team is still under control of James. And that's the style James is comfortable with. Basically the starting PG competition is not really Jeremy vs. Beverley, it is more of Jeremy vs. James, and competing against an all star player, this is for sure a battle for Jeremy to loose. And it really does not matter how much improvement Jeremy could get, since it really does not matter. That's why when we test the big line up, we don't really need to test the big line with Jeremy, we only need to see how Beverley is there with the big line up. Actually it really doesn't matter whether Beverley is there or not, it is more of James with the big line up without Jeremy, whether he could run the offense as the only play maker on the floor. (Sorry, I know Parsons tried, but I think he is still not there yet, kind of scary to see him trying to play make, though he got lots of assists yesterday, but it is still scary when he initiate the offense.) So I hope people would stop this Beverley vs. Lin thing, I think both of them know it is beyond their performance, and also beyond their control. I just hope Rocket would just out of the gate be honest, rather than these starter rotation and look who's better crap.
I voted Lin but not because of the reasons most ppl here are stating. I think we should have him start and see how well he does first. Why?? 1. He can potentially be better than he was last year. If he is, then what more can you ask for? We would end up with a top 12 PG (statistically speaking) if he could post about 15/8 per game. With the work he's seem to have put in, it may be possible. If his play is mediocre or even subpar, then start Bev. Problem solved. 2. Secondly, it would give us more options before the trade deadline. Assuming his play exhibits the aforementioned improvement and his value increases, we could weigh our options and either keep him or trade him. With his current value as a starter, I think there may be just a handful of teams interested in him. However, assuming he comes off the bench, I think his value will actually fall further and we'll be stuck with his contract, and most importantly, it could serve as an obstacle to any future moves by Morey. If he's given about 15-18 mpg as opposed to 25-30 mpg, I really can't see him doing much to be in a position to increase his trade value whatsoever. 3. Assuming he does come off the bench and we end up trading him, I, for one, don't want to see him blow up like he did with the Knicks. I would rather know for certain what this guy can do and what kind of player we are actually trading away. Currently, he is a slightly above average PG, the question is can he make the jump to a top tier PG this year? I personally would like to see before we make any moves.
I agree it's not about Bev vs Lin. It's about Harden and how Rockets are going to place suitable talent around him that will complement his play. Lin is an insurance and backup for Harden, as Morey puts it, a secondary option for playmaking.
I voted for Lin to start not that I think he is better than Beverley. I voted for Lin because I am mad with the alternating start BS when the organization meant to start Beverley all along. Also I voted for Lin to start the same reason d12babymamas did. At his level of play, Lin is expensive. If the organization did not showcase him by starting, he's going to be stuck with the Rockets until the end of his contract.
See I think his contract being way too expensive is a misconception. John walls numbers aren't THAT much better than lins but he makes significantly more money than him. (and I promise people would go nuts if we got wall) when you consider their situations their numbers are very comparable, Lin had some really good games this yr when he was the primary ball handler. If he was in walls position there's no doubt in my mind his numbers would all go up. Likewise, Ifwall had to share the backcourt with harden I have no doubt that his numbers would deflate. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that John wall is a bit overrated and that Jeremy is not way overpaid. As for who should start? I think Jeremy will play way better with Dwight than Bev will. And honestly despite popular belief, I think he'll play better with James too. But I won't be surprised to see them both in the lineup to start a bunch of games. Lin and Bev are fun to watch together.
No need to make this a Lin vs Harden thing. If Jeremy Lin becomes a sharp shooter, and plays defense just as well or better than Beverley, then he would easily be starting with James. This is Jeremy Lin vs Beverley, not James Harden. James Harden has a superstar skill set that requires complementary players, and Beverley complements Harden more than Lin. Again, this doesn't mean Lin won't be getting the bulk of minutes and finishing games.
