I believe they have to let kobe become a free agent to have the cap room to sign players otherwise his cap hold would be beyond massive and would give the lakers little flexibility.

renounce kobe then resign after all the other guys are signed

Once he's renounced, the large cap hold is removed but so are his bird rights. So, Kobe's contract situation has little do with the Lakers' future. Even if they were to let the market determine his value, some bottom feeder would sign him to a max deal.

I don't see Kobe even taking a small pay cut to accommodate another star like Wade did. If he's getting paid less it's because that's all the Lakers were willing to pay him.

How is this a story one way or the other? Is there really any team that Kobe would agree to play for that would have any interest in him? I would think no. Of course if he didn't pop his Achilles, maybe he'd have interest, but the problem with him is that I don't see him being a back of the bench player without being a cancer in the locker room (he'd be a cancer in the locker room no matter what) and that's going to be the level his game is at.

Kobe's going to ask for $20MM+, then Buss will send him to the front of the Free Agent line
