I think black people suffer a lot from not knowing their ancestry more than we or others care to admit. I agree, their is pride in the resilience and survival of slaves and their immediate freed children and the progress that has been made so far
african americans need to us slavery as a crutch on why they're such a failure as a whole in the eyes of most people in this country. There are very few people you will find who think of the african american race as a successful group in general and thus we have guys like al sharpton and jessie jackson whose whole business empire is based on reminding black people about how its everyone elses fault but theirs that they dont succeed in life
Sitting there in your mama's basement, sniffing glue again... As Yoda might say, "MAJOR troll you are. Suck you do."
its true.....and its wonderful i just read how much we're spending on welfare...awesome http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/report-us-spent-37-trillion-welfare-over-last-5-years_764582.html#
Of course there were free african americans, when someone says 'All' it really isn't meant to be taken literally. I'm not arguing alternative history. All I know is they weren't taking any other slaves. The purpose of Jewish Internment camps wasn't slavery though. They just figured "Hey, since we're going to kill these guys any ways we might as well get the most use out of them." The example still stands because that's why I used that very example. The Nazi propaganda was meant to separate the Jewish people as much as possible especially by appearance even though they didn't look very different, Nazi propaganda always reinforced that they were different. You don't buy it but it is hard to find a similar example throughout history that resembles American Slavery isn't it? Most forms of slavery throughout history were the results of military victories or simply debt slavery. A slave in ancient athens could purchase their freedom and there were even laws that they could not be hit. In America Slavery your options of being free depended on the generosity of others. After years of subjugating a race, years of treating them like animals, telling them that their children are born slaves, years of this and surely it had a effect post-slavery. This is more easily accomplished when you can tell the difference between a black baby and a white one and even a baby that is mixed with both. I think the effects of this kind of slavery are clearly evident in all the time afterwards. You don't have to buy it, but how many examples do we have here to study? That are as cruel and as specific as this one?
Hey genius you do realize that non-black people are on welfare too right? Even so, welfare is not a result of slavery or some benefit that black people cashed in on because of slavery...so I'm not sure what are trying to prove when posting that in this thread.
ya but those are the ones that really need it. The african americans i see with escalades and on welfare are the problem. They sell drugs and other stuff and then have cash jobs. I saw a guy at a gas station a few weeks ago ask if they took ebt, they said no, he pulled out like $3k in cash to pay for some candy before he hopped in his charger on rims
Just as many love how white people try to attribute all of his good characteristics to his white relatives.
well considering he basically had no contact with black relatives during his upbringing... (and of course I would dispute the fact that he even has any good characteristics)
What does this even mean? Harvard has a black population of 9%, higher than the college enrollment average of the black population at 6%. Why does this matter? I was raised by my white mother and her family most of my life. Does it somehow change me? Not sure about the story behind his dad but I am pretty sure he (dad) was not a US citizen and therefor isn't indicative of the culture of the US people. In fact, I hate when people say black culture or African American culture. Do all white people in the US have the same culture? Is somebody from Boston going to be the same culturally as somebody from Jackson, Mississippi? No. Again, quit oversimplifying black people into a they're all the same type of grouping. It's idiotic. About 38% of black people live in poverty, a too high number that does not get enough attention itself, but given that information it would seem the majority of black people don't live in such conditions. Jalen Rose is some type of authoritative figure on the subject? If I remember correctly, he was lambasted for his stupid comments. Oh, you meant intents and purposes by the way. See my answer on number 3. Idiotic statement is idiotic. More idiocy. What is a typical white? Asian? Middle-eastern? You're thinking of stereotypical. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Lol! I am amazed at such idiocy.
Your family are not the only ones who shape you as a person. Some of your previous posts are indicative of you thinking the same thing.
This whole debate can be settled by President Obama. He just needs to call a Beer Summit between, oh I don't know, bigtexxx and amaru.
this is silly. european had guns. africans had spears. that alone would have driven the slave trade as much as europeans wanted. africans trapping africans (for those goods from europeans btw) only made it simpler. but all this is irrelevant to to the topic.
In the same era of American slavery, there was slavery all throughout South America and the Caribbean where conditions for slaves were equally bad or worse than in the US. In fact, over the course of the Atlantic slave trade, it is estimated that only 5-6% of slaves ended up in the US. Most of them ended up in other countries like Brazil, where, at one point, slaves were over a third of the population. I understand that this is a touchy subject, but downplaying of slavery in other parts of the world or at other points in history isn't helping your case at all.
Simplicity is key in business, which, terrible as it was, is what the slave trade was. The additional marginal cost of having to go catch your own slaves out in the wilds of Africa could have been the difference between using African slaves over slaves from other parts of the world. Or, it may have shortened the profitable lifespan of the Atlantic slave trade. Sure, different levels of technological advancement also drove the slave trade; doesn't mean African participation didn't add to it. In any event, you are right; it is irrelevant. I simply brought it up as a counter-example to JG because I don't think that intraracial slavery is any better or worse than interracial slavery and that people will always put financial interests and personal prejudices before racial solidarity.
Those same slaves who were black yeah. When did I ever downplay any other form of slavery? Speaking of Brazil, those afro Brazilians (and interracial slavery) deal with discrimination all the same so there you go.
