I think everyone knew it would play out this way. It goes back to the same reason Dems lost in the 2011 fight and why they won in the 2010 and 2012 December fights: Leverage. Whoever has the leverage will win each of these battles. At the end of the day, the GOP had no leverage here.

I used to live in Peterson's district when I was in Fargo-Moorhead. He's an interesting guy. I dont agree with him on some things but I really respect his work. The man knows farm policy.

I'll spare this thread anymore discussion of Minnesota politics but we should discuss it over a Rockets game some time.

C'mon it is a great Texas tradition to discuss Minnesota politics going all the way back to LBJ and Hubert Humphrey. ;)

What part of the state do you live in? Unfortunately the Rox don't play in Minneapolis until Monday Feb. 10 but might be up for watching some other games at a sports bar.

“One of my favorite old Kentucky sayings is there’s no education in the second kick of a mule. The first kick of a mule was when we shut the government down in the mid-1990s and the second kick was over the last 16 days,” “There is no education in the second kick of a mule. There will not be a government shutdown.

“I think we have fully now acquainted our new members with what a losing strategy that is,”

    --Mitch McConnell

I live in South Minneapolis about a mile south of the U of MN. I probably can't do the opener on the 1st but might be up for the Jazz game on the 2nd.

I will send you a message when we get closer to keep from cluttering up the this thread.

    Requisite: Thanks Obama!

Why can't these politicians use colorful turns of phrase properly?

If, indeed, this was the second kick, and there is no education in the second kick... then obviously we are headed for a third kick.

There was for awhile and I knew the owner but now there are lots. One of Popeye's franchisees recently bought out almost all of the KFC's in the Twin Cities and is converting them to Popeye's. Now Popeye's are relatively common why KFC's are a rarity.

Shutdown Was About More Than Health Care

NEW YORK (AP) -- Regrouping with Democrats after a bitter budget fight, President Barack Obama on Friday cast the recent spending-and-debt standoff with Congress as "a symptom of a larger challenge" but one offering Democrats the chance to show voters the virtues of their vision for government ahead of the 2014 midterm elections.

At the heart of the impasse that shuttered the government were deep disagreements about what role the government should play in helping Americans succeed, Obama told about 60 donors at a fundraiser for House Democrats.

"The shutdown was about more than just health care," Obama said. "It was about a contrast of visions, about what our obligations are to each other as fellow citizens."

"And we've got the better side of that argument," Obama added.

It was the first glimpse at how Obama and Democrats will seek to frame the crisis in the minds of donors and voters ahead of next year's pivotal midterm elections. Obama put political events on hold during the 16-day shutdown but returned to campaigning for Democrats Friday with a pair of top-dollar events in New York.

Obama told donors that the impasse was "a symptom of a larger challenge," exposing how American politics, with its intense focus on ideology, has become detached from the problems ordinary Americans face. He portrayed the crisis as an opportunity for Democrats to unite behind a vision of broad-based prosperity, where the government has a hand in giving people the tools to succeed.

"We believe that government has a role to play," Obama said.

With how ghastly his websites going and the incredible damage pouring from nsa revelations, he better change the news cycle with something like immigration reform or jobs/inequality (likely the latter as the brownies can't vote yet and triangulating the rewards comes years after his term ends).

This is his biggest opportunity so far in this current meandering term

I'm shocked SHOCKED I TELL YOU!!!!

I wonder what the results were when they referred to it as the "Affordable Care Act"

    http://washingtonexaminer.com/70-per...rticle/2538184

American voters overwhelmingly support a delay of Obamacare’s individual mandate to purchase health insurance, according to a portion of a new Republican poll shared with the Washington Examiner.

Republican pollster Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies, in a survey conducted for the GOP group Crossroads GPS from Sunday through Tuesday, found that 70 percent of “registered voters” support delaying the individual mandate in the wake of problems with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act. Fifty-five percent said they “strongly favor” such a delay.

Boehner b****slaps the tea party over the new budget agreement. Hopefully he and sane republicans have had enough of the crazies.

Boehner Snaps At Conservative Groups For 'Using' House Republicans

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) displayed a rare flash of anger at outside conservative groups on Wednesday when asked about their opposition to a two-year bipartisan budget deal struck between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA).

"You mean the groups that came out and opposed it before they ever saw it?" a visibly angry Boehner told reporters Wednesday, his tone rising. "They're using our members and they're using the American people for their own goals. This is ridiculous."

Did you even read how they phrased the question? Talk about a terrible push poll.
