They should trade him while they can, he's a very good player but he just doesn't fit into their grand scheme of things.
Not really buying what y'all are selling, at all... to me, this articles reads as, The Pistons Will Match Future Offer for Monroe. In other words, nothing to see here. I like Monroe, but he's overrated. I like that he is tall, I like that he is efficient, but I'm not buying him as a great fit here (see chart below). He doesn't have any presence on defense from what I've seen as far as shot intimidation. Now, if he can play great man-to-man D then I'm all for it, but I wouldn't know, I admittedly haven't seen Detroit play much lately (at least I admit it, y'all will probably just pretend to watch Pistons basketball).
Its a bad sign when your gm signs Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith to high dollar contracts and is willing to risk losing Greg Monroe your best young player if they aren't willing to sign him to the large deal. Monroe is every bit as worthy of getting the same deal Cousins got in Sacramento. Pretty much every GM in the league will be calling about Monroe this Winter, and he should get a max offer from a team like Dallas this Summer fairly easily.
is there some sort of cap benefits they gain by making him go restricted? like the rockets and parsons
Maybe Dumass---ops, typo; Dumars---intends to use just-signed Brandon Jennings (barf!) and Monroe in some sort of Rondo trade. Jennings will be trade-eligible and Rondo will be healthy at about the same time (knock on wood). Dumars was pretty hot for Rondo. Monroe isn't worth the max that some team might pony up, but he's a very good player, and I wouldn't mind him as our 4/5. But it ain't gowanns to hap'n.
Warriors need to make an offer for Monroe, Bogut's contract is over after this season. I'd rather have Monroe than Bogut at this point in thier careers. I don't know if Bogut can ever gain his 1st step back, so far he's still looking sluggish and slow. But it is only still preseason.
Monroe may be their best young player today, but my money is on Drummond in the long term. I thought he had a chance to go #1 in the draft last year, but he fell far to low. If he stays healthy and continues improvement he will be the best center in basketball in three years. Drummond is a physical freak. I think DET is taking the correct strategic path. Just match Monroe's offers, or in he, Drummond and Smith don't work let him go if Drummond continues to develop.
He's not elite level talent so why sign him now when he'll be a restricted FA ? Let the season play out and then evaluate then. Who knows maybe he'll suck? or get injured or don't get the play time with the new players etc. You'll always have the option to match later.
I don't like the fit atm. He's developing his high post game so maybe at some point in a few years. Besides, i don't see them letting him go. Hibbert didn't get an extension either, few do. His agent was probably asking for the max, and there's no reason to give that to him right now.
