We have one point of agreement. That would be a horrible ticket. Back to my first point, a viable third party is more possible now than ever. The "true conservatives" (McCain was never a conservative even though he claimed to be, nor was either Bush) pull out of the GOP and start an effort to consolidate odd bedfellows including a very diverse conglomerate (even including some unions and "traditional" Hispanics.) This is more possible now than ever before. I fully expect it.

That depends on how you define a conservative. If you're talking social issues, McCain were certainly not. If you're talking about slashing spending with no regard to anything, also true. If you're talking about being fiscally responsible though, I would argue McCain was most conservative than most back in his heyday (late 90's, early 2000's) before he sold his soul to win the nomination.

Further splintering the Republican Party sounds like an excellent idea. Please do this immediately.

Nothing is going to change. The Tea Party won't disappear because gerrymandering has made it possible for incumbents to win over and over again.

It couldn't possibly be that Dem candidates aren't good enough to win in those places?

Well... Seeing that if you tally up all the Congressional district votes across the nation and come out with more Dem votes than GOP votes I would lean towards gerrymandering being the primary cause.

Why would any American, from either party, think that districts like the following could possibly be a good idea for representing them?

(spoilered for size; this comes from a GIS course b/c it's so bizarre.)

Promise you, a democrat will not become U.S. Representative in East Texas, not going to happen, not even close. If Louie runs against Cornyn, another Republican will win. We are talking Tyler area here. Maybe your other six, but not this place.

I think it could "splinter" both parties; there are still many DLC democrats out here, especially in the South. The so called "progressives" are really the left wing of the Democratic Party. Hispanics are typically traditional culture, do not share many progressive social values. Actually, there are many Blacks who are more religious and conservative. Strange alliances can emerge.

My response was to a post saying that maybe the wingnuts were better candidates than the democrats they defeated. I was saying a trained monkey in a cute hat would be a better congressman than Ghomert but the idiots of my home town would still vote for him because god, guns, Murica and racism.
    It embaresses me no end.

A majority of the House Republicans voted for extending the shutdown and for default. This wasn't just 30-40-60 wingnuts. This party, as currently constituted, cannot govern, cannot recognize the national interest. All three Senators presumed to be running for President voted for shutdown and default. All but one presumed Senate candidates from the House voted for shutdown and default.

The Dem ads and debate lines write themselves.
