I'm not so sure we got the best of that deal. Hoes to me is a AAAA player. No power at a corner outfield spot isn't going to cut it. Hader is years away, but has potential. The pick should turn into a MLB player, but no guarantees and it will be a while. We gave up a good, MLB proven SP who was extremely good at home. Plus Norris is still relatively young and would have helped us even down the road once we're "good again"... So I'd say that it's way to early to tell how we fared here.
I can live with Hoed as a 5th outfielder who gives you a High avetage which these team neefs right now. Hader will be a stud I believe and the pick gives the Astros alot flexibilty when it comes to signing Rodon.
Bud Norris was hardly an impediment to saving money. He was overrated around here because he was our ostensible "ace," but he isn't going to garner that large of a contract in arbitration or free agency. With Hader we actually got a guy with some upside, and Hoes should be an ML regular for a long time. The draft pick is the most interesting part, because it's a a deeper draft than the past two and our front office seems to have a lot of confidence in making picks. If you think your front office can take some of the risk out of draft picks based on superior scouting and algorithms, then you should expect to get more value out of a pick relative to another club's expectations. In that regard, BAL probably underrated that pick compared to how our club viewed it.
I don't think they underrated they jusy had to give up something for Norris. The more I think about it Astros need to make 3 great picks with in top 40 picks.
Baseball America: Early Top 50 Guess who tops the list. Rounding out the top 5: 2. Jeff Hoffman, RHP, East Carolina 3. Tyler Kolek, RHP, Shepherd HS, Shepherd, Texas 4. Trea Turner, SS, North Carolina State 5. Jacob Gatewood, SS/3B, Clovis HS, Clovis, California
Expect Luhnow and company to hype up several of these guys, as leverage in case we need to bargain with Rodon
If any of the other names on the list are hyped up, it will probably be more legit than we think as this looks to be a deep class (glad we have that competitive round pick from Baltimore). IMHO there will be no bargaining with Rodon, he will demand the full slot for the first pick and more than likely get it.
Barring a rough season, he absolutely deserves that. We're past the days of needing to manage our finances to get as many good pieces as possible in the draft. Take your badasses, pay them slot, and call it a day.
I agree Astros are to the point were they will be very deep regardless if they go by BPA and spent most of their money with first 3 picks. I say Astros go 1. Rodon 1.a. College bat 2. HS pitcher
The full slot will be at or close to $8 million. I can't see Rodon getting more than the top overall slot. I'm sure his agent and/or advisor will want more, but I'm sure they'll be happy with the full slot. There's a long time between now and the draft, and as silly as it sounds, there is a lot of talent in this draft that could move up to challenge Rodon. No one expected Jonathan Gray, and Sean Manaea was considered a challenger to Appel for the first overall pick. With the amount of picks that the Astros have, there is a good chance that this could be their best draft under Luhnow.
hm, i disagree. rodon is an uber prospect, but the new system takes all leverage away from the players outside of returning to school. rodon may do that, but the astros will get next year's #1 pick for not signing him and we can just draft him again. rodon will sign for slot.
I believe the rules state you can't pick the same player twice, unless the player agrees to it. Rodon doesn't have to come here for anything... he could always refuse to sign in order to get some place else.
And if he does that he runs the risk of the astros having the first two picks next year and only being eligible to be drafted #3 or later with the lower slot bonus associated with those picks. Last year the #3 slot was about 30% lower than the #1 slot. That's a lot of money to give up. Under the new rules I'd be surprised if any prospect ever goes over-slot at #1. Maybe a true generational talent?
I think he signs full slot he would be stupid not too. To be honest he should of been drafted after his freshman year. There is nothing more to prove by going back to school if he dominates this year. Appel return because he wasn't drafted first and he got lowball by Pittsburgh. Plus he needed that extra year to fix his mechanics and he became lights out this past year. I also believe Astros are fue for a Monster draft draft wise in 2014. I bet barring injury Rodon makes it to the Majors a year after getting drafted in June 2015. That is why Astros have a shot 2015 to make some noise.
Once you go to a 4 year college, you're only eligible to be drafted after your junior year (unless you're a soph eligible draftee)
