    Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC):

"We won't be the last political party to overplay our hand," he said. "It might happen one day on the Democratic side. And if it did, would Republicans, for the good of the country, kinda give a little? We really did go too far. We screwed up."

Confirmed--no House vote tonight. Boehner couldn't whip the votes from his caucus.

So presumably back to the Senate and hope Ted Cruz decides not to play spoiler? Or are we already in platinum-coin territory?

I'm trying to imagine how absurd it would be if jobs in the US were in jeopardy because a couple politicians in Norway promised a super minority to get rid of their socialized healthcare. America would be pissed.

If this shutdown kills the Tea Party's influence in the next election, it will be worth it!

No doesn't. ACA is the law of the land, upheld by the Supreme Court and verified by Mr. Obama's re-election. The people who need to swallow their pride are the dumbasses that were deceived such as yourself that they could actually repeal it.

The House GOP is completely incompetent. It's funny after all the whining about negotiating and bipartisanship, you've never seen Boehner try to discuss a deal with Pelosi.

I think for the next go around in January, Dems should tell the GOP they want a ban on all guns in exchange for funding the government. If they don't go for it, ask for an assault weapon ban and harp on why they won't be reasonable and negotiate.

What a mess. What a devastatingly stupid mess we are in. I can not believe we have reached this point.

We are about to lose the credibility of centuries of hard work. Our leadership in the world will be questioned. Just unbelievable. We are showing the world a glimpse of the future and it's ugly.

The Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives abandoned plans to vote Tuesday on a plan to lift the threat of a government default after failing to gain enough support from rank-and-file conservatives.

We have to accept that we, as a nation (we all have to own it, even though it's led by the Tea Party), have chosen to torpedo ourselves. We have to accept our new status as a nation of stupid hicks, no longer fit to show any leadership or inspiration to the rest of the world. It's disappointing to say the least, but denying the plain truth won't make the coming decades any easier.

I don't watch MSNBC, CNN, or Fox, ever. It is pretty rich to have you question my sources, given your posting history.

I wonder what the people in the middle east think of democracy now. We gave them one shining example of democracy at work. :p

I don't care how rigged GOP districts are, House Republicans have ####ed themselves big time over this.

We look like an idiot country - the laughing stocks of the world. Our democracy is broken when a bunch of radicals who make up 1/3 of one party that controls 1/3 of the elected gov't can bring the nation to its knees and risk pain to hundreds of millions of Americans and billions of humans around the world......so they can try to defund a health care plan.

Is this how the Roman Empire fell?

Well the Republican party have snapped in half after it bend over backward too hard for the tea party wing of the party. Maybe this is the start of the GOP on the path of the whig party.

The House GOP have effectively proven themselves incapable of running so much as a lemonade stand. Who needs the other side for gridlock--they come complete with it all by themselves. It's the Senate's turn to (hopefully) not **** the bed now, I guess...

We have a leader who has prioritized partisan "us vs. them" politics over the best interests of not only the country, but the world.

History will not look back kindly on the Obama years. This will be his defining moment -- the day the US defaulted.
