Not really. It would be a better analogy if: A. Americans were actually native to North America and there were centuries of cultural exchange and history between Texas and the rest of the US. B. After the Civil War, the Confederate elite and military all packed their bags and settled in Texas. C. Texas subsequently modernized at a significantly faster pace than the rest of the country. D. Some powerful country, say the UK, put Texas under it's aegis with the threat of retaliation.
and I thought I used some obscure words in my posts....well done! Wonder what percentage of readers here would know that word without context or a dictionary?
The only reason I know that word is from an item in league of legends. I guess videogames some how improved my vocab.
They have some nice, easy to read articles on historical events. All around you are just a whiny prick.
Thats how to stop generalization of people based on race or nationalities, generalize people based on their nationalities. WTG hoss... Methinks ye shall google "irony"
Showing my nerdiness but seriously, Magic the Gathering will raise your child's verbal score No lie, was scoring in the high five hundreds Sophmore year of high-school on the PSAT verbal, started playing magic and got a 680 Junior year. Talking about China and Taiwan, here are two examples that's more similar: Northern Ireland Palestine I hope a reunification of China and Taiwan would be like the Irish example. I don't think something as messy as the Palestinian example is likely, due to a closer shared heritage and lower amount of religious conflict.
I don't think either example are that similar. Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in many ways operate as the same country with almost free movement of people and goods across the border. While there is still animosity between the Unionists (those who want to stay part of the UK) and Republicans (those who want to join the Republic of Ireland) for the most part that is not as prevalent as it was during the Troubles and these days radical IRA and UDA members are more likely drug dealers fighting over turf than ideology. The Palestinians are under occupation and are engaged in a what is essentially a colonial era type struggle against Israel which feels it is facing an existential threat. There doesn't seem to be much interest in things like cooperation on economic or cultural development. The Israelis and the Palestinians see themselves as very different people which isn't the case in Northern Ireland or the PRC and Taiwan. Between the PRC and Taiwan there is a huge interest in economic development and cultural development but a big ideological rift and the PRC doesn't shy away from using the military to sabre rattle. Also while things are culturally very similar many Taiwanese, including many Han, will still emphasize they are different. For example one thing that many who don't know Chinese realize is there are two different forms of written Chinese. The PRC uses what are known as modern characters while Taiwan still uses traditional characters.
Something most American's aren't aware of. Taiwan still claims sovereignty over mainland China, Republic of Mongolia and part of Russia (Siberia). Till the late 1970s to early 1980s, the Taiwan military was still planned on a counterattack and retaking the mainland. In the early 1990s, for the first time a Taiwanese president finally disavowed claims over mainland China and recognized PRC's sovereignty over the mainland. Though Taiwan's constitution still claims sovereignty over the mainland. Culturally the two diverged in the 50s, 60, 70s and 80s, but since the 90s Taiwan and China started converging again both culturally and economically again.
That's not correct at all. Currently Taiwan's per capita GDP is a little over 3 times that of China's, and the gap between the two have narrowed very rapidly over the years. Taiwan of course is a much more advanced economy than China currently and on average its citizens are much richer. However don't forget because of China's large population, there are approximately 300 million Chinese with similar income as the average Taiwanese.
Little League Baseball: Taiwan >>>>>>>> China National Basketball Team: China >>>>> Taiwan (although Taiwan won this year b/c TW had a black ringer on the team) Land Area:
Land Area: China >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Taiwan Overall: Taiwan >>>>> China I think that summarizes it up nicely. On another note I don't think the two will ever reunify. I guess ideally China is hoping to entice Taiwan with the Hong Kong Two Systems One Country model but I just don't see it happening.
IMF. China's per capita nominal GDP is a little over $6K and Taiwan's is a little over $20K As for the Chinese middle class (income between $10K to $60K), according to this article its about 300 million people. http://money.cnn.com/2012/04/25/news/economy/china-middle-class/index.htm
