Because he is vastly superior to Collins. And that is said knowing that Camby's skills have really deteriorated.

Collins isn't near worth the media or possible chemistry distractions. There would have to be a complete emergency at C to consider him.

Nice to finally get an answer to that.

You needed someone to tell you that? Collins is worthless.

I was glad that someone finally actually answered my question instead of piling on more gay jokes to the nth degree (to the point where you can't help but start to wonder how much of it is pure homophobia).

Like Jason Kidd, Doc Rivers and many others, I don't think Collins is worthless. Not for a last-man-on-the-bench, veteran-center-insurance, better-bargaining-position-if-we-trade-Asik role.

Yeah, he's a third string center. His lifetime ws/48 is only .065. But stats don't reflect his contributions as a post and positional defender. His biggest contribution is reducing the opposing team's true shooting percentage. Asik only had a .108 last year even though I consider him one of the best 60 players in the league.

Btw, Marcus Camby had a .007 ws/48 last year.

Year before last, a healthy Camby averaged 5 points, 9 boards, and 1.4 blocks. Jason Collins hasn't averaged over 2 points and 2 rebounds since 06-07. A healthy Camby is probably as good as or better than Collins ever was.
Camby is a rebounder and shot blocker in the same mold as Howard and Asik. It makes sense to pick him up as insurance. Collins can't do either of those things. If Howard or Asik are out, we should play Greg Smith.

Nice cherry picking of stats. When was the last time Collins had a ws/48 of 0.065 or higher? Try 04-05, Dwight Howard's rookie year.

If you want Collins on the team because he's gay, that's your privilege. Why don't you just say that, instead of pretending there is a basketball reason to do it.

I want the Rockets to contend for a championship, so I hope they do not waste a roster spot on him.

One of the problems there is the shift in the nba, teams don't really pound it in any more, the Spurs stopped, the Lakers got MDA, Memphis run it through Marc at the high post.

It's why players like Perkins (and Collins) have become a liability, it's your help defense, not your man defense that matters most, Yao (and before that Shaq) was the last guy that was a viable tactic with.

I don't think Collins is completely useless, but he is definitely a fringe NBA player. If you were to rank every NBA player 1 to, say, 450, he's going to be close to 450.

First, he hasn't played more than 600 NBA minutes a year for 5 straight years.

Second, his PER, RAPM, and pretty much any traditional or new-fangled stats available have all been bad to terrible during this period.

So, under what circumstances would he really get minutes for the Rockets?

The team has Dwight Howard and Omer Asik, who are two of the best C out there. Behind these guys, the team is likely better off playing Marcus Camby (if healthy), Greg Smith, Donatas Motiejunas and Terrence Jones at C than giving minutes to Collins.

I feel bad for the LGBT community because of what he's done. Poorly timed announcement gambit that makes it look like he's attention-mongering (which I believe that he is).

He essentially used the politics of the situation (don't tell me that an NBA player, of all people, didn't consider the ramifications of announcing such information to the public) to add to his public awareness, despite his awful basketball value.

6 points & 6 rebounds at the peak of his career, about a DECADE ago? Fouling out 14 times that season? Is that what a championship team looks for? (Cmon people, don't be dense.)

And he would be dead last on the depth chart... are we going to let go of Canaan, Covington, or Williams to keep someone like *that* on the roster?

they brought him in as a veteran presence/back-up.
a lot of young guys on this team that could benefit from his "been there" leadership.
i also read that he was being groomed as some sort of assistant for houston in the future.

clutch. you need to start a site that is for adults.
the level of maturity here is at an all-time low.
right around the same caliber of fans that cheered for an injured schaub yesterday.
again, i can only read about a page of posts before i have to leave in disgust.
as a rocket fan, to even be associated with some of these children makes me sick of embarrassment.

No to Jason Collins. I can think of better backup veteran centers than him.

It's got nothing to do with his choice of lifestyle. Simply put, let's not get a player that's not as good as other ones we could hire simply because he is gay.

I wish he was more dominant down low. I am also not sure how he communicates on defense, like is he good at calling out backdoor cuts or how is he dealing with penetration?
