And how many years since his retirement as a player has not McHale held significantly more power and responsibility than an assistant coach?
There are simply no other precedences for a dominant player like Jordan retiring while still in his prime. But the Bulls were a championship team with Jordan and made it to the ECF without him. With just about the same roster. Seems simple to me, but I may be missing something.
True, but being a GM/Asst GM is a very different job than being a HC. Morey is a great GM, not sure I'd trust him as a Head Coach or even assistant coach. That doesn't mean that McHale is incompetent as a Coach (he's not), however his being a HC isn't because of his ability to construct offenses or defenses. Not a knock against him, just is what it is.
Absolutely true. But from experience, if you are overseeing a staff of 10+ you had better be great at delegating responsibility. McHale does not have to be a great offensive or defensive coach. He just needs to be wise enough to listen to those who are. I believe that the wave of dominant egotistical head coaches has ended. The job is to big for the JVGs and D'Antonios to be effective anymore.
They didn't make the ECF first of all, they got bounced in the second round in a really weak eastern conference. Secondly, you ignore the 1995 season because it doesn't say what you want it to say. Jordan came back in 95 to a Bulls team with a 35-31 record and even with a rusty Jordan, the team went 12-4 to finish the season before eventually getting bounced in the second round again. Now they probably make the playoffs no matter what because the East was a joke even back then and you didn't even need a winning record to be in the playoffs, but if Jordan doesn't come back and they kept playing at the same level, they are probably a 6 or 7 seed rather than the 5 seed. Do they even get out of the first round if they have to play the Knicks or Pacers? I'm not sure.
I wouldn't go that far but McHale is actually willing to work with Morey unlike Adelman who actively worked against him. I think that willingness to work with the FO was a large part of why he was hired.
http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_1994.html They did get bounced in the second round, you are right. But they did win 55 games without Jordan, a surprise to most at the time. And Jordan is not listed on their roster. http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CHI/1994.html Your reference to the 95 Bulls is less relevant to the conversation than the 94 Bulls simply because it is yet another year removed from Jordan leaving the Bulls.
http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2011/07/rockets-name-kelvin-sampson-lead-assistant-coach/ first off all the assistants minus Chris Finch were hired by McHale...please can we just go one day on here without people saying **** like its fact when really all their doing is talking out their ass.
Its hilarious, same old crowd with their same b****iness. Its clear as day that their agenda doesn't involve the success of the rockets, just their idol.
Phil won his last two with no MJ and no Shaq. Yes he had the lopsided trade (back then at least) and the refs but it wasn't necessarily a cake walk to win championships with the very much flawed Bynum and Gasol as his second and third best players.
Lets see here...McHale 30+ years experience in the league Kelvin Sampson going into his sixth year as an assistant, before that he was a successful college coach J.B. Bickerstaff going into his 9th year as an assistant coach Chris Finch going into his 3rd year as an NBA assistant. so these guys watch practice EVERY SINGLE DAY. Don't any of you think maybe just maybe they know a little more than some Lin fans who's biggest enjoyment in the day is going home, looking at a poster of Lin and touching themselves. I hate to break it to you but all the assistant coaches have more than likely agreed that beverly may be better than Lin based on them watching countless numbers of hours of practice that NONE OF US HAVE SEEN. Y'all act like McHale is some dictator and gives his assistants no input about the Lin, Beverly competition. They have talked about this i'm sure a lot more extensively than most of us can imagine and if all their basketball minds agree that beverly will be a better starter and help us win more games, it would be wise to trust them and not some fan boy posters.
Actually if I remember correctly (which can be a dicey thing at times) Kobe, Gasol and Odem were the drivers behind those championships. Odem was a transcendent talent but flawed as you point out. However Gasol was one of the finest centers in the league and a 20/10 guy.
What part of it was "not true?" The best way I can describe the relationship between Morey and McHale is Art Howe and Billy Bean. The real Morey's lap dog, as you put it, is Finch. He is rumored to be groomed by Morey to be Rockets next headcoach. McHale has the total control of what's going on on the court, just like Howe did on a diamond field. Do you remember Morey traded BOTH of our rotational PF's at the same time and McHale went ape about it and let his feeling known in a press conference? It was clear as day that Morey FORCED McHale to play DMo (and Jones), especially DMo's agent complaint about his PT. He came for a visit and went home without making another fuss. Why would Morey trade Morris when he could've traded him to the Suns for the same value anytime during offseason? The answer is to guarantee DMo PT. What McHale was doing was not in the best interest of Rockets future by not playing DMo or Jones. We had three rookie PFs and McHale was playing Delfino as PF! I can't really blame him for fattening up his wins for his future resume. IMO, deep in McHale's heart, he knows he is not here long term.
It is just the preseason. But I interpret the lineups as an indication that the coaching staff has questions about who to start at the PG and PF spots. Since the coaches have more BB knowledge in their little toe nails than I will ever have, I am comfortable that they will make the correct decision.
Funny! The fanboy logic seems to be: "McFail may know more than we do (even though he sucks in NBA terms), but his racial prejudice makes him unable to process what is obvious to the rest of us, even at the expense of losing more games than he should and damaging his own career."
Your entire post oversteps anything that can be logically backed up with anything even resembling a fact as did the statement:
I think I can agree with this; I'm sorry to say but if Mchale's daughter didn't pass away, he would have been fired. It was also understood that Mchale was only here temporarily. We got into playoffs last season because of the players, not Mchale. We had amazing roster because of Morey, not Mchale. And we're going to do well this year too because of the players, no thanks to Mchale. When you have Harden and Howard both on the same team, it's hard NOT to do well
I agree with this. I did not forget how this team lost the important games at the end of the last season when it comes into question if we get the 6th or 7th spot. No, we even lost the 7th spot to the Lakers, so we had to play against OKC instead of the SA or even MEM. I am sure that we could go farther. It was frustating to see that Harden was injured and tired but the whole offense relied on Harden's isos. McHale genius plan was to go small even if you needed a rebound. If it did not work he was going smaller. Asik on the bench and Delfino as the C. Absolut genius. We've got many talents in the roaster but not on the coach side. I believe that we need a better coaching staff to get the ring.
