The Rockets have the potential to be a very hard team to play against because they will possibly have an elite second unit. If you have Lin and Asik and Garcia on the floor together replacing Howard, Harden, Parsons and Beverley.... you can be very hard to beat.

Having Lin or Harden on the floor at all times was something that a lot of Rockets fans were pushing last season. It was literally painful watching Tony Douglas or P.Bev running the offense of the 2nd units some nights.

The biggest complaint I had about Lin's minutes distribution last season was that McHale was literally playing Harden into the ground, and then he would follow that up with sitting BOTH Harden and Lin.

Zero pnr playmakers on the floor is never a good thing.

P.Bev has his talents for sure. He's a great on ball defender, and can score through both dribble drives and spot up shooting. However, a great play maker he is not. Put him with a good playmaker like Harden or Lin and P.Bev becomes much more effective.

People talk about Bev's defense all the time, but he's a beast rebounder too. Probably one of the best rebounding PGs in the league. Only Rondo comes to mind as being better.

I have been hoping Lin would become the 6th man, so he could wreck havoc out there without having to stand and watch Harden.

Not a slight on Harden; a slight on McHale not being able to implement an offense that uses the two players' strengths.

But the current offense leaves a very capable scorer standing around - unless he anchors the 2nd unit. Hopefully this works out... so I can tell all my friends, "told ya so!'.

Lin as 6th man is a potentially good move for the Rockets. It probably will result in higher point total for the team, though it may have a negative impact on Dwight's scoring.

If you look at the reaction on Clutchfans you can see what the impact would be for these games played in Asia... it feels like it is dissing Lin, no matter what the final minutes or score impact is, and fans who are there just because of Lin are not likely to be happy.

The interesting question over the course of the season will not be Lin starting or playing as 6th man, it will be the total minutes for Lin.

If Lin is 6th man but keeps at around 30 minutes per game, I predict a couple triple doubles this year.

They're experimenting with different rotations. When everyone who's injured comes back, it wouldn't surprise me if the second unit was as good as the starting one.

A starting Lineup like tonight was really fun to see...

Mentally start the game with hounding defensive energy. Then let Lin run the show off the Bench like a Manu. Lin really is a 2 guard and in this offense, he would best be served being the spark plug scorer and playmaker whenever James is on the bench.

    Starters:
Howard, TJones, Parsons, Harden and Beverley

    Bench:
Asik, DMo/Garcia, Brewer/Caspi, Lin and AB.

Lin could jump start his game by having the ball in his hands and letting him be a playmaker in the open court. And once the game is on the line, Lin wouldve gotten confidence in his game/jumpshot allowing him to be more successful.

I head him say that also. It does not mean that he does not like his type of playing. BTW that statement was a paraphrase of Morey's statement on reddit. McHale has his boss also.

    "I'm not a LOF, BUT..."

Calm down LOFs. If Lin gets hurt we need Bev to be comfortable in the starting role. It's exactly what preseason is for.

Either way, Bev at least earned a start in a preseason game.

I believe Beverley is one of the best Offensive rebounders at his position too. (I'm the type who looks at OR before TR)

A couple triple doubles? I think you are a little too optimistic... Double doubles maybe. But this could help the team and Lin out - I don`t know why some LOFs are against this. Manu played his best ball as a 6th man...

    That's conjecture.

Over the years there's been no shortage of debate over how good Manu would have been if he was a starter on a different team than the Spurs, especially given how well Harden played last year.

Would Manu have been a superstar starter on another team? Nobody knows... but it sure makes for interesting debate.

That's assuming his minutes stay at around 30. Could be optimistic, but what is the point of making a boring prediction?

The 1st scrimmage Lin and Parson was on the 2nd unit.
