The interview was posted in the "Rockets in Manila" thread but I think folks would want to discuss what the coach said here.

So, hopefully Ö returns quickly so the team gets to see how it works. It's likely the biggest thing to watch this preseason in terms of impact on the team' win totals go.

If Ö and Dwight can play together without getting into each other's way and each remaining as effective as they are individually, it will make things very interesting. According to some measures, including RAPM, Howard, Harden and Ö are the team's 3 best players and there is a huge gap between these three and the 4th best guy (which is a close race among Lin, Beverley and Parsons). Being able to have your best guys out there for as long as possible is a good thing.

Edit: Here's an Ömer interview, in which the reporter asked him to address McHale saying that they'll try him and Dwight together: http://www.solarsportsdesk.ph/bk/bk...clusive-with-houston-rockets-center-omer-asik

Edit 2: Clyde Drexler interview, he was asked about this topic at the 14:56 mark: http://www.solarsportsdesk.ph/bk/bk...nba-legend-clyde-drexler-on-solar-sports-desk

Wow. Actually, I definitely like that. I'm just not sure if that will be possible considering our offensive principles. I would also be aiming for that, unless they prove to suck together as having our best players on the court as much as possible is key.

A full 15 minutes per game of "Twin Towers". That's a lot. Hopefully McHale can get it to work out. I sure hope Asik then is working on his 15 foot jump shot otherwise things will get kind of tight in the post and allow for few option. I wonder if he'll start Asik. I'm thinking no.

I don't like it. That's too much time trying to make one of two centers play PF.

I think Dwight started out as a PF

I think Omer's playing time will be dependent upon whether or not the opposing team's 4 can shoot outside.

    Not so fast.

On the contrary, I think our success can be defined by how much we make the opponents 4 shoot from the outside. That's what JVG would say.

Bring IT! Beat us from the outside with your stupid stretch 4s

They would just double Dwight and sag off of Omer since Asik will be standing close to the rim anyway. Neither can shoot jumpers and both are bad free throw shooters.

On defense, we will have a problem with teams who will use a strech 4. Who will guard the perimeter, Dwight or Omer?

Again, i just don't see how this can work. Unless one of them suddenly develops a decent mid range J. Otherwise, it just presents too many problems on offense. Yes, we will be really good on defense/rim protection and rebouding but someone has to defend the perimeter once the other team uses a small lineup.

My prediction: Omer gets traded during the regular season. To whom? Ryan Anderson, Thaddues Young, or Jeff Green. Of course i would prefer Kevin Love or LMA but that's a bit of a stretch.

I was watching a game on youtube recently, Rockets v. Atlanta. Josh Smith was having a great game apparently against the other power forwards and so in the fourth quarter of a tight game McHale had Asik guard Josh Smith. Asik shut him down. Smith dared not go inside; and then Asik with his long arms got enough in the way also of Smith's jump shots. Defensively Asik can hang with most NBA power forward, even the shooters. Against Portland for example Asik guarded LMA almost exclusively, and did a great job.

I just hate to see them stoop to this just to get Omer to stay. You would think that he sees the potential in this team to win this year with him on board behind Howard.

Asik isn't any worse an outside shooter than DMo, or Greg Smith, or Tjones, so heck why not? :p

It's not about "getting Omer to stay." He is under contract for 2 more seasons and I doubt that McHale is thinking about 2015 free agency. The team, not Asik, gets to choose whether he stays or goes.

The effort is about trying to win games. Generally, putting your best players out there as much as possible is helpful toward winning games and Omer Asik is really good. Meanwhile, the normal PFs on the team-- "Lesser Howard" Jones and Motiejunas-- have looked far less ready to NBA than either Howard or Asik.

You want to play guys who are good, and not guys who are not good. Simple.

But that makes Hack-A-Shaq difficult. Which one do you foul. The opposing guards will have to look at the bench...

    "This one coach?"
    "no. what? this one?"

And btw, if you foul both at the same time its a technical. Yeah, look that **** up.

If your coaching philosophy is to put your "best players" into the starting lineup...then yeah, Asik should start. In some of the other threads discussion has revolved around whether a "role player" or a "star player" would fit better into the starting lineup as the power forward. Asik is not the best "fit" at the 4 but he is certainly one of the best players on the roster outside of Harden and Dwight, so...

Not so simple. Have you ever considered that part of being a fan is yelling at a Coach for not playing the unproven kids, because "how else will we know until we (the fans) see them play."

Of course, no one said that about Parsons as a rookie. Because Coach knew he could play and played him, before we knew.

    weird how that works.

This would be a good argument if it weren't for one thing. Neither one of Howard/Asik are PF's. Even better, let me prove to you why this is true.
Look at the majority of early posts and you'll see phrases like "I hope this works" or "We'll see what happens". Even McHale's quote in the title tells you that they are still trying to figure it out. They know that at any time that they are on the floor together, that one fact that neither are a PF will stand out like a sore thumb. Possibly the entire time they are on the floor together.
