    " 33 minutes is an "arbitrary" figure, as you yourself stated" And what figure should I have chosen. I was attempting to keep it simple. Explicitly stated in the notes: "It would have been more accurate if I had used the actual player minutes from last season. " I can accomplish that trivially. In about 3 minutes from the data I have stored in a DB. I stated that it was a basic post so simplifying was a prime concern. Nuff said.

    " My knowledge of STDDEV tells me you are an outlier when it comes to self-importance." OK. since you have such an intimate knowledge of STDDEV can you tell me why I pointed out its importance to the future analysis of this data?

    Yeah, that was before we got to know each other.

    You should know that mixing arbitrarily chosen numbers with historical data adds an order of complexity; it does not make things simpler for educational purposes.

    OK, so let's get your revised calculations using historical data for MPG. . . .

    I'm still wondering about your criteria for using pre-2012/13 data in your calculations. Are you going to provide that, or is it part of the "black box"?

    If I question your method, you think it is snarky, when the whole purpose of your post is supposedly to instruct. Well I don't think anyone should practice your method as it stands in OP. Sorry if that bothers you.

    How about we save the STDDEV discussion until after you fix your original post? You're asking me to predict your use of STDDEV when your initial calculations are unpredictable.

    As to whether I'm snarky or not, I'm content to let everyone else in this thread judge which of us is the bigger jerk.

    You wrongly assume that I care about your opinion of me. Self confidence has never been one of my short comings.

    You can rest assured that this is my last post attempting to assist the masses understanding of basic NBA statistical analysis. I make my insights available to everyone and the obnoxious ingrates come out of the woodwork to assault my reasoning without being able to understand the basic underlying concepts. Have you and your like done justice to the average CF member? I certainly think not. They have had their one chance at gaining insight into the "black magic" of NBA stats taken away from them. And you also. Feeling good about your position now?

    If you are going to critique my future posts I recommend that you get a BS in mathematics. Otherwise I wish you well. We will not cross paths frequently. Good luck to you.

    Wait, the masses need you. You just conceded that your MPG figure was arbitrary, with no historical foundation, meaning that your original post was not historically accurate, just a demonstration of arithmetic. Don't go until you have done historically relevant calculations, please. Nobody can do it but you.

    Firstly, that assumption was not implied. I was merely trying to appeal to whatever sliver of humanity you might have buried in your soul by showing you how disrespectful you have been to everyone here.

    Secondly, you do care. Otherwise you wouldn't be getting locked in a flame war at 3 in the morning.

    You misinterpret healthy debate as "obnoxious ingrates coming out of the woodwork." Any hostility directed at you was merely your own arrogance being reflected back.

    BTW, if you check my post history you will see that I have almost always sided with you (though I didn't really care for the main ideas of this thread, but that's neither here nor there) My beef with you now has very little to do with the substance of your arguments, but rather your disrespect for your fellow fans.

    In my experience there's no such thing as luck.

    I may reconsider in the future, but this is my one and only basic statistical analysis post for at least six months. I have had my fill. Everything for a while will be cloaked within advanced mathematics or incredibly intricate programming. I will make an attempt to sum them up in layman's terms, but you may have to remind me of this promise. I can be incredibly OCD when it comes to big projects. Best to all.

    And just to be crystal clear, I do not enjoy explaining basic concepts. I just viewed it as my duty to the members of CF.

    Your lack of understanding is only exceeded by your ignorance.

    And you have never gone into a DiffEQ course and had the professor tell the class that they will be proving their way through a course that can easily be summed up in a half a page of hand written notes.

    You have never entered an Abstract Algebra class and had the professor announce that the course has been to easy and it would now be taught according to graduate course standards.

    You really have no training in mathematics do you Carl?

    The sad part is that someday you will look back and realize how insanely arrogant you sound. Or, more likely, you won't, which would be even sadder.

    You might stop and consider the possibility, jtr, that there are many, many people at least as intelligent and mathematically savvy as you claim to be on this board.

    Your whole 5 years of six-figure salaries are impressive. In another 10 or 15 years you might gain the maturity to see that your self-appointed status as the one person who can untangle the "black magic" of advanced statistics is as tiresome as your self-appointed martyrdom and transparent attempt to get people to come to your defense ("I may reconsider ... you may have to remind me").
