This thread started off terrible but it got a lot better once the badger was cornered.

Absolutely. Roll players can have their usage rates vary dramatically after trades or even from year to year on the same team depending ultimately on fit and on how their taking of shots affect true team shooting %.

Sorry, it's late. I meant "role players" and "team true shooting %." Time for bed

People will react more favorably to his post of it wasn't all nonsense. The OP's "analysis" says that the Rockets starting PF would average 5-6 FGA per game (he really means per 33 minutes) while playing with the rest of the starters. The following are the list of players who played more than 1000 minutes and averaged 6 or less FGAs per 33 minutes in the 2012-13 season, along with their number of FGA/33 minutes:

    Reggie Evans 4.4
    Festus Ezeli 4.95
    Bismack Biyombo 5.23
    Chuck Hayes 5.23
    Kendrick Perkins 5.32
    Pablo Prigioni 5.78
    Udonis Haslem 5.87

These are it. There are literally no other players that fit the criteria.

So, we have one extreme case of a pass-first PG, and a bunch of big guys with very limited shooting range and offensive game. Haslem has some shooting range but he's kind of diminished physically with age and playing with 3 high-usage max players. In the end, it's really hard to shoot so infrequently unless you are one of those guys who are pretty much only allowed to shoot within 5 feet of the basket (and your team mostly feel nervous about you take those shots)-- we are talking about Kendrick Perkins (remember him from the playoffs?), (Out of Shape) Chuck Hayes stuck on a chucker team, Festus (for the Rest of Us) Ezeli, and Bismack Biyombo territory here.

Unless the Rockets starting PF has this kind of limited skill set and is relegated to this extreme kind of limitations on his role in the offense when playing next to the starters (or otherwise), the flow of the game will likely have the guy average significantly more than 5-6 shots per 33 minutes (whether in the starting unit or overall on the season) because there will be enough situations where he is going to be taking shots that the coach wants him to take-- when he has an wide open spot-up J, when he has an offensive rebound around the basket, when he has a dunk or layup from a nifty cut or drive and dump-off from Harden or Lin, or when the clock is running down and there's no one else to pass the ball to.

There are plenty of players who take a complementary role on the offense, but to achieve the "5 or 6 shots per 33 minutes" extreme status take a set of special circumstances that is unlikely to apply to the Rockets current PFs (and certainly will not apply if the Rockets actually obtain an proven offensive talent at the PF spot).

I highly recommend that you view this persons posting history. Has he ever contributed anything of value? I would have to say no.

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/search.php?searchid=384911

Pretty much snarkey content free one liners. They are also divisive and unsupported.

You sir are just quoting my initial post. Raising unfounded questions without basing your disagreement on any lucid criticism whatsoever. You quote specific text, without the accompanying pertinent notes. Your analytical skills were surpassed at 12 by my offspring.

Can you even demonstrate a basic understanding of the arithmetic and the simple concepts used in the initial post of this thread? Come on. Prove it to me.

You have posted no data to refute any statement that I have made. Everything you have said is just content free drivel. I can sum it up as follows:

OP claims "some coherent statement". Absolutely no meaningful refutation occurs. OP claims "another coherent statement". Then just mindless drivel about information that while statistically significant within the claimed margin of error does not meet the posters un-enumerated and unexplained criteria for data.

All in all the poster embodies most of the worst traits seen in CF posts.

PS I don't believe McHale is going to have to enforce the bad mid-ranged shot moratorium. Morey is not going to sign that type of incredibly inefficient player to the roster. Welcome to Morey ball! Say goodbye to your imagined PF roster addition.

Did you just attack someone who was merely trying to sum up the thread for people just joining in? Seriously?

I like where this is going...

You have not demonstrated the slightest understanding of the initial post of this thread. Certainly not of the concepts and not even of the basic arithmetic. If I speak of cumulative error or even about such a basic topic as a confidence interval you avoid the topic like your head would spin all of the way around if you even considered the idea.

I cannot believe you are as ignorant as you pretend to be. But I have been surprised before.

No, I attacked a person who has some personal stake in trying to make it fail. I recommend that you read the previous posts instead of searching for some pointless Stewart endless loop of a video.

Edit: sorry I have completely run out of patience on this topic.

Maybe he's an evolved form of JCDenton? Like in 2 years we're gonna look back and laugh at ourselves for not realizing this was just a master class in satire?

Nothing in his post attacked you...and you attacked him. Douche.

And it's called a GIF, moron, but I guess they don't teach that in Statistical Jackass College.

This thread has taken me from being a proud father to a post intending to demistify extremely basic statistical analysis for the average viewer to a take absolutely no prisoners attitude. It is remarkable the effect that 25 ignorant vindictive posts have had. I am certainly not proud.

I confess I was full of poop in this thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=244488

I told you lucid criticism repeatedly: 33 minutes is an "arbitrary" figure, as you yourself stated. Thus your conclusions are arbitrary, beginning from post 1. You just keep diverting attention from that due to pride, not an interest in the truth.

You say FGA will be like last year's, but you use MPG that is unlike last year's. There's no method here.

My criterion is: consistency. If you want to use last year's FGA, at least use last year's MPG, even if you are still mixing and matching last year's rosters of different teams and some stats from the year before that (yes Orlando, no Thunder or Knicks: why?).

I did not imagine any PF roster addition. Can you find where I did?

What, you want me to do some math problems to show my knowledge? My knowledge of STDDEV tells me you are an outlier when it comes to self-importance.

You're not that smart. Just reading your English shows that, not to mention looking at the basis of your calculations. I repped you a few days ago, but now I realize you're a total blowhard. My initial posts in this thread were fairly objective. But after reading all your posts here, I no longer care to be objective. You're not cool. I don't believe you're smart. Some of the people you condescend to may be fooled, but not the adults. You act like your departure from CF would be painful for someone. It wouldn't. I dare you to leave.

Hey how come you haven't written a featured article for Clutchfans? I mean, clearly you're a god among mere mortals here, shouldn't Clutch be begging you for your input? Hmm...

Does anyone want to take wagers on how long the ban hammer drops on this clown?

Sine the informed assumption is that Aldridge would slip into a Bosh like role, having him play the same minutes as Bosh really isn't entirely arbitrary.

As a note, if Harden, Howard and Aldridge took the same attempts as they did in their highest volume years on 3 separate teams, Orlando Dwight, Aldridge's solo year and Harden last year, they'd end up with an almost identical scoring attempt rate as the Miami trio did together the last 3 years.
