The problem isn't really whether he *could* be good or not. The problem is that Houston has a history, fair or not. The minute he struggles, fans will turn on him, simply by association. Unless they think he's an absolute steal where they draft him, Houston just needs to avoid that situation. He'd be better off playing anywhere else, and Houston would be better off without the drama.
True, and a good point. He's not a bad backup QB prospect at all, but probably better to just avoid that situation altogether. Kinda see Manziel the same way though, but from the other side.
because he cant throw, i dont think he can read defenses, and he takes off when his first read isnt there, a 300lb linebacker will crush him... Its gonna be funny when this guy gets crushed in the NFL a best case player comparison for Manzel is a poor mans Michael Vick which is what Todd McShay said( the similarities are uncanny), look at how they both throw the ball, and stand tall in the pocket, always looking to take off. Also Kevin Sumlim offense would torch any team if you put any decent dual-threat back there
Keith Price has to be here. He plays at Washington. Texans need to draft 2 Qbs.... Jameis Winston will be the Grand prize in 2015 but after him it gets pretty thin.2014 is a very deep Qb class. Speaking of Winston dude will be a better prospect than Luck.
Hogan, Murray, McCarron, Washington QB all look very good and could be huge steals in the 2nd-3rd rds. Well coached smart guys.Draft is loaded with good QBs Pass on Manziel though too many off the field character issues plus not really a good pocket QB
Yep he is a redshirt sophmore. I havethem rank like this. 1. Teddy Bridgewater 2. Hundley 3. Boyd 4. Mariota 5. Manziel then there is around 5 to 6 other pretty prospects.
As far as the Eye test. 1. Teddy 2. Boyd 3. Mariota 4. Hundley 5. Manziel 6. Zach if he can run a 4.8 40 sleeper Price,McCarron,Carr, and Murray round out the rest.
Drafting Derek Carr would be a public relations nightmare that would DWARF passing on Bush and VY in 2006. It would be like.......hell, I can't even think of a comparable situation.
I don't love the read option in the NFL, but I'd still lean towards Mariota, with the hope that he is more of a taller Russel Wilson than a Colin Kapernick... though either would be great. I love his ability to scramble... not as sold on his ability to know when to and when to not scramble, but he's blazing fast, has prototypical size and arm strength (maybe not as strong as Kapernick, but plenty strong), apparently is a great teammate and leader in a soft-spoken sense, is intelligent, comes from good stock (good family), etc. For all his speed, he doesn't rush a ton. Manziel has had rushing games of 14, 12 and 9 attempts this year (and was consistently over 15 a game last year). Hundley rushed 20 times last game, and had another game of 19 attempts this year. Boyd's had three games with 13 or more rush attempts this year already. Mariotta's high game is 7 attempts this year. Even last year, he had only four games with double digit attempts. So the hope is that he's an explosive runner, who does so only as necessary. For sure, his QB skills will translate. Will his decision making? Who knows. He doesn't have a ton of experience and even less in really big pressure games. But he'd certainly be very very very interesting, and we know we ain't winning a SB with Schaub
If the Texans unload Schaub and bring in Derek Carr and he puts on number 8, I will laugh for days. This upcoming QB draft reminds me of the 1999 NFL draft. A lot of QBs, but most likely some will be fool's gold. Walter Football Currently is mocking Aaron Murray to the Texans in the 2nd Round of the 2014 Draft. They say 1.) Jacksonville Bridgewater 2.) Tampa Bay Tahj Boyd 12.) Cleveland Johnny Football 43.) Minnesota McCarron (Unlikely now with signing Freeman) 46.) Arizona Stephen Morris 49.) Houston Aaron Murray 68.) St. Louis Derek Carr 82.) Chicago David Fales
The more I read about Marcus Mariota, the more I'm excited about him. He's like a taller, bigger-armed Johnny Football. Though, having anyone like Johnny or Marcus back there running our naked bootlegs excites the heck out of me. This team is BUILT to support a young, dynamic, but inexperience qb.
The NFL IS a copycat league. Remember how everyone was trying to run 5 WR sets after the Rams, then it was 3-4 blitz schemes after the Ravens, then it was the Miami style wildcat. Give defenses time to adjust and they will develop ways to shut down a particular formation. So now when your QB can't pickup yards on designed runs is he good enough to make the secondary back-off so he can pickup yards by scrambling? So far Russell Wilson is succeeding, and shockingly Terrelle Pryor as well, although teams don't have quite enough tape on him yet and he's gotten vastly better as a passer in the offseason. Kaepernick isn't exactly setting records right now. RG3 isn't 100%. Newton is still turning it over too much. Vick is racking up yards but is hurt again because he's not as huge as Cam. Andrew Luck has to be mentioned as well. His arm is so deadly, that he sets himself up for big gains off scrambles.
Johnny Football is legit. Only question is his maturity. After top 5 I see a slight drop off from the next 5 qbs. 2014 will problavy have as many as 11 qbs drafted in the first 3 rds.
Really excited about this upcoming draft. Would absolutely love to get one of Boyd, Bridgewater or Mariota. A mobile QB opens up a lot more options. A lot more fun to watch if you ask me.
