I agree. I think the coaches probably asked DMo to focus on defense.

In case you are interested, a 2012 paper out of the Sloan Analytics Conference (D Morey's) about player synergies indicates that a post/wing combo like Harden and Howard would do better with a "limited 4" (very strong rebounders, defense oriented, like Dennis Rodman), than they would with a dynamic, well rounded power forward, with strong rebounding (like Chris Webber, and Pau Gasol), The first combination is predicted to significantly over perform expectations.

The paper is interesting to geeks like me :), but it just confirms the strong common sense that there are only so many shots to go around.

It's preseason vs. the N.O. Pelicans. Even the Lakers didn't pack the house for their preseason opener.

At least the fans who were there were pretty enthusiastic. It's a bit of a sad sight. San Antonio and the Mavs don't seem to have this problem.

Dude just, ffs just shut up. I'm a big Lin fan but Lin got killed that game.

    1/11 fg, 8 TOs.

What?! What?! What did you say? Just shut up. There's no conspiracy.

You get your butt kicked. You get back up and keep going. That's it. There are no excuses. There are no oh I was inhibited? Shut up. You leave everything on that court regardless of what happens. Melo, d'Antoni whatever. No excuses.

Wait, so a dominant center who takes lots of shots plays best with a PF who doesn't demand shots and is productive in other ways? I think I need to start writing papers for Sloan.

Also, Dennis Rodman is the GOAT. No lie.

I think that's pretty close to how it was. That's where I had a problem with Jones, when he came in with Howard and Harden he was taking more shots than they were. Jones needs to know his place, and as long as Harden and Howard are playing well they are the first and second options.

This is so Stocktoneque. Very rare to see this kind of play since Stockton retired.

Asik sounds fine except he's a little bit too tall?

Asik and Dmo are about the same height, but Asik is a bit slower... might or might not be ideal...

Rebound and defense are Asik's strong point, not Dmo's. So I guess Asik's a bit too slow that's why he doesn't fit ideally?

I haven't watched Spurs in late 90s, but how did Duncan/Robinson twin towers work out? It seems like this example contradicts that "paper".

    What about Gasol/Bynum...Love/Pekovic...?

If you put a Rodman type of player next to Howard, defenses can ignore PF and double-team Howard. Kind of like last year when defenses have often been ignoring Asik.

However, defenses couldn't ignore Ryan Anderson in his Orlando days, so Howard could do more damage.

I guess only passing, rebounding and defense isn't enough. You have to keep defenses honest.

A question: who do you think fits better in current Houston's starting PF spot: prime Rodman or Toronto Bosh?

Oddly, that is not how I read it. The dynamic wing and high score, high rebound, high block big have a synergy of 7.594. The dynamic wing, high score, high rebound, high block big, and limited big have a synergy 5.434. While 5.434 is still a positive synergy, the limited big actually hurts the synergy created by the dynamic wing and high score, high rebound, high block big.

There were was either not enough information or information was inconclusive on how a dynamic big would mix with the dynamic wing and high score, high rebound, high block big. Also these coefficients are based on fit, but the paper specifies the primary factors for success are talent, fit, and coaching. As dynamic bigs tend to be more talented outside the few exceptional limited bigs, the loss in synergy would have to be quite dramatic to overcome the talent difference.
