How many games will the Rockets win this year?

Just for a reference, there are 82 games in the season. That means 41-41 is a .500 record.

Last year, the Rockets had 45 wins.

The best record last season was held by the Miami Heat, who finished with 66 wins.

The worst record last year was held by the Orlando Magic, who finished with 20 wins.

Here are the official final standings from last year:

I am going with 54 wins. Could be more or less, but I think the Rockets are going to be very competitive. However, this is Dwight Howard's first year with the team and they may struggle at times as they work out the kinks. I wanted to go with 55 wins and bump my selection up to the next level, but my gut says 54 wins is the best number to choose.

Of course I hope they win them all.

50-54 should be the expectation. Anything beyond that and we are truly in the contender race.

55-59, mainly because I'm homering. 50-54 is realistic. Below 50 and we are not meeting expectations.

I went with the homering choice. :D

I say 55-59. No homerism. We're just that good.

Last year we won 45 games as the youngest team in the playoffs.

We should win 5 more games this year with the same core just through natural maturation. That's 50 wins.

Add Dwight and he will give you at least 10 more wins, so 60.

Asik gives you about 5 wins, so since he is playing at least 1/3 less, you subtract about 2 wins.

    So 58 wins this year.

We haven't proved anything and there are questions about how quickly we can gel. Miami didn't even get off to a fast start when the Big 3 got together and I think it is fair to say that we might not click on all cylinders at the start of the season but we will really finish strong.

    They will win 82 games.

    Why guess anything else?

You don't win anything for guessing the right number, so I'll always guess the Rockets win it all.

In the past I have done the exact same analysis as yours and I arrived at 61 wins. I had one more category to consider than you. I added 4 wins due to actually having an offensive system in place for the start of the season.

Then we should also factor in injuries, and subtract some wins due to our unusual lack of injuries to key players last year.

Completely true durvasa. At the moment I just don't know how to account for those asynchronous events. That is an incredibly complex calculation with a huge margin of error. I could do it at a very large granularity using probability (given that the average team lost x number of minutes last season due to injury ...) but it would all be hand waving.

I just don't think it is something that even Morey and his staff consider, except to have backups at every position available.

Lots of good teams in the West, so I'm predicting 50-53 victories.
