Some of you may remember this :). Used to be a pet play for the Rockets in the AB/Lowry-Martin-Battier-Scola-Hayes era.

Smart Battier took this Adelman play with him to Grizzlies and Heat. Helped upset the Spurs in '11 & win ringzz with MIA:

    awesome vid,

There's like 20 examples of Battier hitting the curler for an easy layup. I have to laugh at the Griz and Heat versions, though. I didn't see Battier once executing to the post curler, because Zach and Lebron just demanded the entry option, instead, which didn't result in better position for them than normal entry passes.

So, I wouldn't say Spoelstra or Hollins were able to run like Adelman did. You need multiple options on the floor to prevent the defense from clogging the curler; otherwise, as we see, it defaults to a simple entry pass or weakside swing.

haha ... let's not say Battier had the same success on that play with Spoelstra or Hollins as he did with Adelman and the Rockets...a worse team by far, btw.

Martin looks like a way better curler than anyone else

I miss that 6'8 fairy floating everywhere and flopping everywhere

One of the plays show an option which must always be guarded.

If the PF defender tries to slow the curler by stepping wide, the offensive PF (watch Scola do this) immediately becomes the curler to the basket for the pass from Battier. The PF defender cannot help on this play. The play freezes him. The help MUST come from the weakside.

    Thanks.

I should say that though Grizzlies and Heat may not have been quite as crisp with their execution at times, there are good reasons for there being (way) more Rockets than Grizzlies/Heat clips.

1.) The Rockets ran this play way more frequently
2.) Battier didn't play as much for MIA/MEM as he did for HOU.
3.) I don't tape nearly as many Grizzlies and Heat games as Rockets games

Our offense under Adelman was sooooo much more dynamic. I miss watching it...

We should make this the CP play.

Offense under McHale last year was 6th ranked in the league. What was the highest for Adelman in Houston, including the Tmac/Yao years?

    EDIT-

    Found the answer:

    07-08 15th
    08-09 16th
    09-10 18th
    10-11 6th

Seems like the best defense for this play is to get the PF out of the block.

Just musing, but as I watched the Rockets in previous years it seemed like the every year after JVG left the Rockets defense got worse. Do you think it was culture or players?

Played at a much faster pace. Under Adelman we were better in half court sets, IMO.

Box set with down screen to make Shane the feeder. Weakside bottom of the box curls around strong side block for easy score!!! Shane went off on game 7 in the finales CORNER 3. Pesonally I like the other play they use to run for Shane the corner set to the weakside in horns and Shane coming up off the double stagger screen for the top of the key 3.

When you lose a 7'6 center and replace him with a 6'6 center, Kevin Martin, and Abrooks back court your defense will suck

I have to agree. McHale was about as hard nosed of a player as anyone in the NBA, and you know that he will try to get everyone on the team focused on defense. We as fans know that the center will give around a league leading defense next season. Can McHale refocus the other positions to give a lock down defensive effort on D? He obviously will try.

nah, that just changes the play. You are talking about doing something before Martin starts his curl. Even if you could force the offensive PF to where he doesn't want to go, then the curl simply doesn't happen. You can easily convert to another equally potent play, because now the defense just gave up so much room under the basket strong side. PnR or UCLA cut come to mind.

Understand, the reason the post curl works is *because* the defense can't push the PF out, or they don't want to (rather stay in the post).

The defense to this play is weakside help, just like pnr's. Get them into their third option and close.

Hey, HMMMHMM, I was exaggerating. Heat and Grizz did it too. Great collection you put together.

But, damn, man. I wish you were my neighbor with all your Rockets game "tapes" and great selection of music to set them to. I'd bring the brisket and beer.

Instead of bodying up Battier, why doesn't the defender play off of him and try to deflect/intercept the pass to the curl/post player. True, you risk giving up a long two, but you can recover to prevent the trey
