But Freeman is in no way shape or form a better QB. Not now, not in the past, not in the future. Even if the Texans picked him up, he'd never play for us, just like Jeff Garcia. It would be a pointless move.
I think I know enough about football to know systems and coaching can make players succeed when they've failed in the past. Alex Smith is a pretty good example of that but carry on with your crystal ball.
Alex Smith actually had success in San Fran though, it's not like he went to the Chiefs with no resume. Kaepernick jumped him by just being that much better when he had a chance to be. Freeman's resume is not good. A lot of QBs do not get 2nd chances unfortunately for him. Most teams stick with their guy.
Yea, it's always good to have a starting quarterback that smokes weed and is on speed. That makes for great decision making.
Oh, he had success when he got a great coach? Really? Okay. So when he sucked those several years before Harbaugh showed up his resume was good? Okay. You guys are brilliant with your crystal balls and let's not try because it costs us nothing and he might suck logic. BTW, what was the track record of success for Dan Orlovsky and Matt Leinart?
Y'all who dont want freeman are crazy. He's a probowler. Kid can play. Get him in a Texans Uni!!! http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=8270375&postcount=203
Actually his 2nd year wasn't so bad, he also had a pretty serious shoulder injury that plagued him for like 2 years or so IIRC. If the 9ers could have found a better QB they would have, but they drafted him at a time where you had to pay your QBs big money and where the #1 pick in the draft was more of a burden than a blessing. You're using a crystal ball as well when you say he's going to be better for us than Yates or Keenum.
Does anyone think Yates is the long-term solution here? Does anyone think the Texans are going anywhere this year if Schaub gets hurt and Yates is the starter? If not, what is the harm here of cutting him and bringing in a backup that actually has potential to be a decent starter if Schaub continues to falter or gets hurt? He may not be interested in that role, but this whole "Schaub is mediocre but we don't want to try anyone unless he's 100% certainly better" nonsense is how you end up with Schaub forever.
I think they ride it out with Schaub this season. He will be pathetic on the big playoff stage then Rick will look for a qb in next year's draft. Hopefully first rd
I never said he's going to be better than Yates or Keenum. He may or may not. If it costs you Keenum to rent Freenan when you already have Schaub and Yates then that's an acceptable move. Keenum is undrafted free agent that's never played a snap in the NFL. Alex Smith's second year? 16 TD's, 16 interceptions, 2890 passing, 6.5 yards/attempt 74.8 QB rating. Josh Freeman last season. 27 TD's, 17 interceptions, 4065 passing, 7.3 yards/attempt, 81.6 QB rating. Anyway, Kubiak loves his young men so it's doubtful he'll do anything but it would be nice to take a chance for once and see if there's anything they could do with Freeman. Low risk potentially high reward move. Later.
If the Texans have a horrible season then they are better off just drafting a new QB than picking up possible damaged goods. If you are a QB you have to play REALLY well to get a 2nd chance in this league because teams usually want to groom their own guys. Will the Jags pick him up? He means more wins for them and I'm sure they are looking forward to drafting Bridgewater any ways.
Exactly. The Texans are going nowhere with Schaub and Kubiak. TJ Yates is serviceable but nothing more. I wouldn't have a problem bringing Freeman in.... but it isn't going to happen, because that is not how Kubiak or McNair work.... just too bold a move. "Major, we really like our quarterback play and believe it is in solid hands for the next decade. Matt has proven to be an excellent NFL quarterback and relays my plays in the huddle as well as anyone. Yates is a young man, that when Matt retires in 7-8 years will get a shot to lead us and can be a winner. Case is tough and dang-gum nails and the young man can be an elite leader and battler when he gets his chance in 15-16 years. I am really excited about where we are as an organization and team." - Gary Kubiak
What if the team is 2-5 and Schaub is terrible? Or if Schaub gets hurt? Which QB gives the team the best shot: Yates or Freeman?
Picking up Freeman in no way prevents the team from drafting a new QB - it's basically a risk-free move. It's not like anyone is going to be jumping to sign him to a long-term deal mid-season here. I'm not suggesting you pick him and immediately make him your starter. I'm suggesting you pick him up to improve your backup QB position, and give yourself a legitimate option to bench Schaub should he falter or get hurt instead of just giving up on the season in that scenario.
I agree with you but Matt has the intestinal fortitude as someone lactose intolerant in Baskin Robbins..... if we brought Freeman in, Matt would completely crater and fall apart.
