Clean water and clean air are not essential for humanity.

I'm as conservative as they come, and yet I can truly look at the OP and smh at his complete ignorance.

Eddie, instead of just throwing out a blank condemnation of the 800,000 americans who work for our federal government...AND ARE ACTUALLY THE PART THAT GETS WORK DONE....why not take some of that free time you continually remind us you have and investigate further what makes their work important.

My father and my sister combined have over 70 years of service in for the government in the Dept of the Interior. I can tell you right now, if the work they did wasn't important, they wouldn't have stayed all these years.

well if their work is so important then WHY HAS THEIR OWN EMPLOYER DEEMED CERTAIN COLLEAGUES OF THEIRS AS "NON ESSENTIAL"

non essential means not necessary to function.......I commend your relatives for the time they've put in over those 70 years but I know every business has employees it can't run without, apparently the government feels it can run certain divisions without certain people.......

how is that ignorant, it is my opinion they're non essential but the icing on the cake is that the government is saying they're not essential to functionality

It's ignorant because you don't understand prioritization. Prioritizing jobs in level of importance doesn't mean jobs with less priority aren't important. Yes, you're stupid.

The essential employees are the ones needed to keep the agency open (ie upper mgmt.), but the services that the agency provides are shut down. Take the IRS for example. They have 8,826 employees currently working. Do you think 8,826 individuals can collect, process and examine all of the returns in the country? Don't you think the revenues that fund the government are pretty essential?

So if you want a federal govt that does nothing for you then let them all go. But if you actually want the agencies to provide their service....

    1) USPS was way in the green, and the government kept borrowing money, now when they could use the money it's not there.

    2) USPS charges ridiculously low starting fares to allow us to ship small items.

I ship thousands upon thousands of items a year. Let me explain to you some differences.

    1) Fedex and UPS charge a MINIMUM $5.5 fee per ship (that is using the BEST possible rate), USPS offers shipping under $0.5, as well as tracked shipping under $2.

    2) Neither Fedex nor UPS wants to be in the USPS business. USPS is more of a service than a business in my opinion. If they charged what they would likely have to charge, it would be hard to be an internet retailer for smaller goods.

    3) No chance Fedex or UPS can take over the post office work. Imagine shipping 1000s of items door to door everyday. The mailboxes are essentially for letters/small items. Not only would it be horrible inefficient, it would cost a lot more from any business owner's pockets, which would lead to higher charges on the consumer, everyone loses. We are better off paying a little extra taxes to pay for USPS's losses, or slightly increase price of stamps (I believe they are doing that early next year), than to completely get rid of USPS.
