"USC Head Football Coach Lane Kiffin Terminated" Geez Pat, I know Lane's a douche and a pretty mediocre/bad coach, but there's no need to be THAT drastic.
Might be a valid argument... but there's something new coming to feed his ego. The playoff system. Nobody has ever won a playoff title. He could be the first. He could dominate that too. His best bet to do that is staying at Bama.
Link? Ultimately I think it's safe to say Sumlin goes to the highest bidder. May very well be USC. But if Manziel really did generate all that money I think TAMU can figure out a way to match anyone, including the NFL.
Theres a ton of articles suggesting he's on the list It won't be about the money, it will be whether he wants to move to a more prestigious program or stay and build A&M in college station (if he's even considered/offered)
Wow, Conference USA -> SEC -> Top program in the PAC 12...all in a span of three years! Has there ever been such a meteoric rise of a coach? I'm pretty sure Sumlin is confident enough in his reputation at TAMU, the recruiting pool and his track record that he'll stay if the money is right. USC is more prestigious, but after winning at Bama, I feel like this dude really believes he can take the SEC throne. At this point, he will probably talk to USC just to leverage more guaranteed money.
Sure - it happens all the time. Urban Meyer went from the Mountain West directly to one of the best programs in the SEC. Jim Tressel went from I-AA ball to coaching the best program in the B10.
In the same token, a lot of coaches that are successful but don't move fast fizzle out and their stock is never as high again.
I'm normally dismissive of rumors that have Chris Petersen leaving for another job because he has always been so steadfast in saying that staying in Boise was best for his family, and specifically, his son with special needs. But Bruce Feldman, who is pretty connected, has been saying that Petersen is eager for a change, so maybe there is something to it. I'll bet Sumlin's name is linked to the job at some point as well, if for no other reason than his agent has a way of floating his name for just about every job. Before he settled on A&M two years ago, he was reported to be signed, sealed, and delivered to both Arizona State and Illinois. I'll really be interested to see where the USC program goes from here regardless of who they hire. There seems to be an assumption out there that any number of good coaches could return the program to glory, but I'm not 100% sold. Over the last 30 years or so, USC has had all of one coach that has had them consistently among national title contenders and that's Pete Carroll. Do they have the potential to get back to that level? Absolutely. And with the right coach, they will. But I'm not sure it's a slam dunk. I'm also interested to see where Lane Kiffin goes from here. As another poster mentioned, he has a way of falling up. I wouldn't be shocked to see him end up as a head coach at a smaller school like Bobby Petrino at WKU. And since he can clearly recruit, I wouldn't be shocked to see him have some success at that level since sheer talent can win when you are in the Sun Belt or MAC.
Peterson makes sense because the luster is probably off on BSU. I always figured that it would only take one bad season before the program would return to being irrelevant. Time to move on while the window is still open.
