This is very good article, sort of a summary of the ones out there. The sad thing is that this is no revelation. Many could see this coming long ago, even the scouts that predicted Schaub's future in the league. What is so frustrating is the talent level around he and Kubiak and how the window of opportunity could be closing. This is not the Flacco situation of last year and such comparisons are frivolous. This will not end well.
Eye roll, indeed - when did anyone say a good half of football will win you a Super Bowl? He's a liability. It's distressing and, if it doesn't get better somehow (either by him improving his level of play, or being replaced by a better performer), it’s probably going to be the death knell to this era of Texan football. They cannot win consistently with their QB giving games away. But, while the light is dimming… it’s not like he’s overall playing poorly; he’s just consistently making backbreaking decisions (which I’m not trying to minimize: again, he’s a liability). Having said that, if he can eliminate those… I mean, he’s making plays all around those poor decisions, including a half of football against perhaps the best team in the league in which he carved them up. I’m not arguing he can reverse this slide (in fact, if I had to put money on it, I wouldn’t gamble on Matt Schaub right now) but it’s not like we’re saddled with Brandon Weeden and we’re hoping a perpetually bad QB plays like an elite QB. We just need a struggling QB to… stop struggling.
No one was oblivious to his finish last year. Stop congratulating yourself for seeing what every other human saw. Reactionary? Given his total body of work, it wasn’t unreasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt that it was a bad stretch of football and that he’d bounce back and be same ol Matt Schaub this year. Hasn’t happened, and I don’t see anyone trying to run from that. “It”? Good lord... Yeah, eye roll indeed… This chest-thumping, “I win the internet!” positioning is tiresome. Are you happy he, and, as a consequence, the team is failing? Sure seems like it. And it *IS* a different Schaub. This seven game stretch (which includes his 4/6-game slide last year) is the worst stretch of his career. And I don’t note too many people irresponsibly dismissing it. He’s a liability right now and it’s a major, potentially cataclysmic, concern.
Yes, of course that's it, I'm gleeful that my favorite team, with my favorite players, in my favorite sport, is being wrecked by a bad coach, and a bad QB, just so I can rub it in the face of a anonymous passive aggressive troll.
We are all here because we are interested in the Texans doing well. The internet has allowed a means of expression for fans that was never before available. Discussion of details weren't possible before, at least not in the volume and speed they are now. Basically we all want the same thing; a team we can follow with a degree of pride and satisfaction and enjoy the ride. When the Texans were laughable "sad sacks" finding new ways to lose, it was in a dark way somewhat entertaining. Now that expectations are much higher it is not so funny. It is intriguing though, sort of like watching a train wreck. We should look away, but we just can't.
I'll tell ya what, man... I'm not sure I've ever encountered a more entitled fan than your posts paint you to be. They're 24-12 the past two years with two playoff wins and you're comparing it to a "train wreck"?
Poor choice of words. He should have compared it to a train that breaks down a few stops short of your fare, or a train driving endlessly on the tracks to nowhere.
I think that's fair if this season bogs down... but let's at least let the next 12 games play out before we deem a season a failure. Is that asking too much? I know the NFL's model is a unique beast: more off days than game days leads to a lot of idle time to fill and dissect - but we have a lot of football left... (And, frankly - read *any* of his posts; I'm telling you, it's a little sad. He doesn't seem to posses the capacity to be happy. He's already upset that the Rockets - who have been a significantly worse franchise for much longer than the Texans - will be blacked out locally (via CSN) while the Texans continue to air over free TV each and every week......)
Ha...I don't know about his attitude specifically, but I can sympathize with most Houston sports fanatics who have adopted a negative mindset over the years. People talk about the plight of the Cubs fan, Sox fan (earlier this century), etc. Meanwhile, these cities are frequently churning out championships in other sports left and right. Houston sports has an underrated and overlooked amount of misery attached to it, imo. We have 2 rings (that the rest of the country *****s on, no less) in major sports in any of our lifetimes. It sucks. Titles are all I care about, personally. There are no moral victories. Knowing that not all possible measures/the incorrect measures were taken to give the team the best shot possible at a ring - sucks. Reminding myself about the Rockets championships and how I was at the perfect age to enjoy the hell out of them, and being grateful for those even if I never see another Houston sports championship in my lifetime, is all that keeps me from pure misery and despair in regards to our teams.
I don't know... I look back fondly at Campbell, Bagwell, Biggio, not to mention scores of great teams I thoroughly enjoyed rooting for, and they won a combined zero titles. 97% of the teams in the three major sports don't win a title every year. If that's all that you care about... no wonder you're doom and gloom. In one of these threads, someone's talking about trading Schaub for any 15 QBs... how many NFL fan bases do you think would trade their 2011-2013 seasons for ours? It might not ultimately be satisfying - but it sure beats the alternative any day...
Yeah, I too can look back fondly at childhood sports heroes. I'm not a kiddie anymore though, and my tastes have changed. The pursuit of rings is the only thing I care about. I'm not rooting for "my guys" to pop homers and other fun stats anymore. I'm rooting for my teams to win titles. Get out of here with that garbage. The Astros have been here since '62, the Rockets since '71, and the Oilers/Texans (NFL-wise) since '70, minus 4 years of no team. They have converted 2 (controversial) championships out of 132 attempts. That's pure unacceptable misery, and "doom and gloom" is undeniably reasonable when talking Houston sports. We've "earned" it.
Is it safe to say we will never win a title with Schaub as our starting QB? Because year after year, I would give him a chance to prove us wrong... but that hope has almost vaporized into the air now. With the state of our amazing defensive unit and TEAM, our offensive QB is wrecking their hard work. Denver and the old Manning are on their way to probably having the best defensive unit + offensive unit if they keep on playing the way they are this year ( which probably happen )... and our defense is getting hurt because we don't have a QB like the old Manning. It's simple; great quarterbacks allow you to win and WIN BIG. Everything after a great quarterback is secondary. We don't have a great QB in Schaub and that is the reason all of us fans are in heart attack mode, because with the current state and talent of our TEAM, we SHOULD be cruising to the Superbowl, but we aren't because we don't have that high IQ, physical QB who wants to be a man on the field. I'll always be a Texans fan, but that doesn't mean I'm going to keep on hoping for something aka a championship if it's not a reasonable feat to achieve........ with the current the state of our QB. It's just depressing... Shaub folds like a deck of soaking wet cards under ANY pressure and it makes me cry. I still can't understand how or why our organization would pay good money to a QB who has never been to the Superbowl?!!! Texans need a Daryl Morey...
Not to nitpick but the Oilers started in 1960 and won the AFL twice. [derail]And what exactly is controversial about the 2 Rockets championships?
You aren't nitpicking, you just didn't read thoroughly. Nothing is controversial about them to me. The rest of the nation may say that they were Baron-aided.
Seems like a ripe enviornment for disappointment. And titles are nice but fleeting - did the Rockets' championships make the past 15 years of futility more tolerable? You get one, then it's two, then three... you're never satisfied... My only hope is that we have a competitive team. Sure, I want them to win a title - but I don't ultimately make that the standard. Again, 97% of the 92 sports teams (three major leagues) don't win a title each and every year... 1960 on the Oilers but... And, ok. I personally think it sounds like a miserable way to approach sports, which is ultimately supposed to be a break from doom and gloom.
To me, yes, without a doubt. I mentioned that a few posts ago. Thankful that I got to see those. The pursuit is the fun for me, but it's ultimately never satisfying unless it ends in a ring. And I don't think one in any sport every 15-20 years is too much expect. After a championship is won, I can look back and appreciate the building of it, and the journey that it took to get there. Until that happens (which it never has for the Texans/NFL Oilers or Astros), they were all just wasted or mishandled years, when it comes down to it. It's extra hard to watch a team with a clear championship-caliber roster crap away their window of opportunity.
Why be a sports fan or cheer on a team every single year if you don't hope that said team brings home a championship? Wanting my team to compete is one thing; wanting them to end as the last team standing is another.
